"WE WILL SMITE THE INVADERS FROM OUR SKIES! Though they sweep over our lands like the sands of winter, never again will we bow before them; never again endure their oppression; never again endure their tyranny. We will strike without warning and without mercy, fighting as one hand, one heart, one soul. We will shatter their dreams and haunt their nightmares, drenching our ancestors' graves with their blood. And as our last breath tears at their lungs; as we rise again from the ruins of our cities...they will know: Helghan belongs to the Helghast." -Scholar Visari

HP = which model of a million different ones from around the world?

Vista is the operating system., already five years old.

    Post your dxdiag.

Edit: did not read the thread title. Knowing HP, without buying your own personal copy from Microsoft, no.

No. You need it and afaik HP keeps a recovery drive partition whether that relies on the recovery disk or is a bootable option from the BIOS itself is something i can't tell without seeing the PC.

You'd be better off doing a complete reinstall anyway. HP and frankly most of the mainstream PC builders load lots of needless crap in their builds anyway.

You should have your Vista Key sticker somewhere on the PC, if so, all you need is a vista cd to do a complete formatt reinstall, just ask to borrow a mates or something?

The problem with laptops are drivers. For example I have a very nice sony laptop thats about 5 years old now but still functions quite well. I decided to upgrade my graphics drivers not long ago and saw that Nvidia had new drivers out 6 months ago for that chipset. I go to install and it tells me I can not install the drivers on that hardware. Apparently I can only use the Sony Nvidia drivers, which haven't been upgraded since 2009. So even if you did a complete reinstall of Vista you may need the mobo drivers, vid card, sound card etc from HP.

Yeah, those bloatwares consume majority of the system resources needlessly.

Never come across this before, generally it can be a pain to find drivers since the manufacturers don't like to advertise the actual parts in them. But you should be able to find that all out at the moment since the laptop is still running.

But generally the chipset, audio, lan and gpu is all you need. All sourced off the actual manufactures sites (AMD, Intel, Realtek, etc)
