Following the Queen's incredibly successful visit to the Republic of Ireland last year, the Queen has now met with former IRA commander and leader of Sinn Fein in the Northern Irish Assembly and Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland. They shook hands, pretty much completing the symbolic gestures confirming the new era of British, Irish and Northern Irish relations.
So the world isn't all doom and gloom - there are examples of how common sense, compromise, tolerance and forgiveness have won peace and stability for future generations.
Of course McGuinness are still Republicans seeking integration with the Republic of Ireland, and there are still many hundreds of unsolved murders dating from The Troubles and no real agreement on how to investigate them. However, that's besides the point. The point is that hard work of a great many individuals from both communities have turned a borderline civil war to a situation where the future will be approached in peace and partnership.
