Default Queen & McGuinness shake hands in Northern Ireland

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-18607911

Following the Queen's incredibly successful visit to the Republic of Ireland last year, the Queen has now met with former IRA commander and leader of Sinn Fein in the Northern Irish Assembly and Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland. They shook hands, pretty much completing the symbolic gestures confirming the new era of British, Irish and Northern Irish relations.

So the world isn't all doom and gloom - there are examples of how common sense, compromise, tolerance and forgiveness have won peace and stability for future generations.

Of course McGuinness are still Republicans seeking integration with the Republic of Ireland, and there are still many hundreds of unsolved murders dating from The Troubles and no real agreement on how to investigate them. However, that's besides the point. The point is that hard work of a great many individuals from both communities have turned a borderline civil war to a situation where the future will be approached in peace and partnership.

    Certainly good news.
I think it was reall the queen's speech last year that accelerated things so much for the better.

    They give a good example.

    Others should learn from them.

Alex Salmond should learn from it and stop his Scotland freedom campaign.

Or the IRA should learn from the SNP, and put forward their political beliefs without bombing anyone. Enough blood has been spilled fighting for the freedom of Ireland and Scotland, and this is a proud moment for the people of northern Ireland, but it doesn't mean Sinn Fein's mission is finished.

I see the united Kingdom has surrendered to terrorism
Surrendered? We have refused the Republicans' demands, we persuaded Ireland to relinquish its claim to the North, and we made the IRA disarm. The only thing left to do now is capitulate completely and move on to a future in which Northern Ireland is a safe place free from dissident terrorists and with all political disagreements restricted to politicians. Yep, we are quite powerless to oppose them.

A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.

A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."

Except Sinn Fein aren't a terrorist organisation and don't want to spill blood. They are almost an equivalent of SNP. What is your point?

If Sinn Fein get enough votes, they can argue for a referendum and a split. Their constituencies are already considered "Ireland". Ireland doesn't want to persecute protestants either you know...

I don't think there were many winners in this conflict, apart from the IRA's popularity due to Bloody Sunday and other war crimes committed by the British Government.

the rest of the world should learn. If only we can let bygones be bygones, there will finally be peace in this world.

So I can beat the out of you - assume I am able to, and decide that from now on (= before you seek justice) we let bygones be bygones, then there would be peace! How wonderful!

Happend a while back now. Formally on the 10th of April 1998 to be exact. Overseen by the grinning Dajjal Anthony Blair. This sorry event is just slimy afterbirth.

He's really trying to soften his image for elections in the Republic, but a good token image anyway.

I hate the fact some IRA still believe the Queen to be responsible for their troubles even though she has nothing to do with anything remotely important regarding Ireland. They've demonised themselves because of this.

The Royal family and Parliament represent the iron fists of repression to Republicans ever since Willem van Orange and Cromwell. Thats why they went to so much trouble to blow up Mountbatten on that boat. The IRA in their heyday were an amazingly gifted organisation which ran a strict meritocracy. Thats why McG was a unit leader at 21 in Derry. They saw talent and they put it to good use. Who else would have the balls and organisation to mortar bomb Downing Street or the SiS building in Vauxhall.

I'm not saying that all Irish people are terrorists, I'm just saying Ireland is a terrorist state.

    Ireland IS Britain

If terrorism and war didn't resolve problems we humans wouldn't keep doing it.

    Ireland IS Britain
Iceland is also Britain... but that never took off.

Well realistically I think the Republic and UK ought to dissolve as a political entity and reestablish confederation with Canada (Australia, NZ, and heck, the US...) Each State can choose or not choose to recognize the Queen as their historical sovereign. Ireland obviously would not like to and I'm mostly confident the existing USA would not. (Plus you can pretend you got your Empire Back...)

    Not too shabby.

Putin's trying to reestablish the USSR as a post communist entity, the Europeans are trying to make the EU work as a Fourth Rome situated in Brussels (good luck with that), why not an Imperium Nova Britannia?

Although we'd probably need a better name.

Ireland is the land of the Irish. The Irish want to be independent, thus their land can't be considered a part of Britain in the way you want it to be.

I guess there will be trouble when Norway decides to push its claims on Britain. And don't even get me started on Spain and its colonies...
