Default So you like WWII, huh?

I hope I'm not stepping outside the bounds of this sub-forum, but I have a proposition for the those among you that love both history and Total War (hopefully there are a couple of you...). I am working on a new mod for M2TW mod that will start in 1937. The map will include the entire world, with factions selected from every continent. Because WWII falls outside the time frame of the historical research sections of any Total War game, I have come to this sub-forum to seek help from those among you that might be interested in giving research assistance to the project.

I have been interested in the war for most of my life, but a large project such as this one needs other voices. Anyone that is interested can contact me via PM or on this thread.

So that that thread is not 100% an advertisement, I will also start a discussion. One relevant question I can think of is: To what extent could the second world war be considered a total war? By total war, I mean the definition of total war.

Forgive me asking but How the heck would you make a ww2 mod for MTW2? where would you even start O.o

You realize how massive an undertaking this will be?

Also I think the second world war could be considered a Total War for the UK/USSR in the european theatre and Japan

For Germany it wasnt a total war until the enemy was at the gates... they didnt use their women as workers and at no time was the whole country focused on the war they still kept civilian production up.

On the other hand the whole effort of the USSR was directed at the war and the war for the UK was just 21 miles away...

Japan used their women and it was a total war

thats a bad summary but im kinda tired im sure one of the university professors on here can give you much better info

Wrong. Germany throughout the 30's and 40's had a higher percentage of their women working in industry than even Britain achieved in their mobilization programs of the war.

I hate how they don't translate Fuhrer as Leader. It's like when they don't translate Allah as God.

My idea for air campaigns was to use the Assassin Character as a "Wing Commander" who can bomb cities or target enemy armies and characters.

I like your autoresolve idea. TW would still be fun without the battles.

The point is that if you're going to translate what someone said, translate what they said...

Anyhow I'm concerned the world map won't have enough detail. It will work, but the engine's pretty limited.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

France has 22 Regions, Germany had 32 Gau, Poland had 16 Regions, etc. I feel like a Global Campaign is not going to get adequate detail for a WWII game.

Given that the entire game is going to be Campaign map, you'd want more depth. With a world map Poland is what? A single province? Maybe a couple?

I mean how are you going to partition Poland without provinces... Otherwise I think this will be very successful.

I would love to help, however I am skeptical it is possible. Tanks and sea battles you can do. But aircraft are impossible unless you can you convince me.

Also, is it a little late to be starting such a huge mod on that game? Maybe a newer one would be better?

If it is indeed possible, wouldn't a Cold War mod set ~1950-~1990 be a more fun idea?

If you are gonna do it you can have lots of ideas from Hearts of Iron 3.
Then, as throngs of his enemies bore down upon him and one of his followers said, "They are making at thee, O King," "Who else, pray," said Antigonus, "should be their mark? But Demetrius will come to my aid." This was his hope to the last, and to the last he kept watching eagerly for his son; then a whole cloud of javelins were let fly at him and he fell.

    thank you for the suggestion.

Also: It's a sick (not as in cool) idea considering the subject matter, but that video would make a pretty witty advertisement for a WWII total war game

I didn't post more information on the mod itself because I thought this wasn't the correct forum. What I want to build is not so much a total war game based in WWII, but rather a seperate sort of game that is based upon the same engine. The main point of divergence from the total war series is that I am not going to include battle-map style battles. Battles will be auto-calculated (like in Civ games). This means that A. More attention can be focused on the strategic aspects of gameplay and B. Time periods beyond the standard TW time periods are possible. The second point of divergence (at least form older titles), is that I want to make this game fundamentally multiplayer. That means larger emphasis on hot seat campaigns. Believe me, the technical and logicistical challenges of the mod are tough, but they are no worse than many other full conversions.

As for implementing aerial combat, I have ideas which should be shared at a later time.

I was originally considering a Cold War game, but decided I was more excited by the second world war.

edit: Oh, and I chose M2TW as a base because it is the most moddable of the series and the improved battle-map graphics of later titles wouldn't benefit the project.

Empire or Napoleon would be better suited for it.

Empire and Napoleon cannot be modded to include the nessecary world map. I have a decent amount of experience with those engines, and understand their limitations. They simply aren't capable of the nessecary changes. To be honest, anything that was implemented in the campaign modes of Empire/Napoleon can be implemented in Medieval.

But this is sort of a tangent. I'm really interested in recruiting people for historical research (or to help with outlining) on the mod.

Not enough money, disk space. And I'm too lazy.

No but really: Couldn't the creative assembly have just played Age of Empires?

    or ensemble studios play solitaire

couldn't we just stick with horses?
    or unsliced bread? (bad example)

    I guess so.

I have to say people, I'm underwhelmed by feedback. If you have even the slightest belief that an Axis and Allies-like computer game is a thing that you would want to play or work on, PM me and let me convince you.
