    Default More Memory

How can i get more memory for my compter without deleting files because I have this virus which we have only got 50% killed of it but it has eaten away my memory if you know what I mean so I can't play RTW without a crash at the start because it closes it then says virtual memory too low so how do I get more memory?

You don't mean memory but harddisk space, correct?

There isn't much you can do to free up your harddisk without deleting files.
You can run disk cleanup (goto my computer, right lick on your harddrive, choose properties, click disk cleanup)
mark "delete temporary files" and "compress old files", and maybe a few othe roptions too.

But this isn't a real solution.
You realy need to get rid of that virus or else you wil have the same problem again next week.

virtual memory doesnt have to do with actual hardisk space does it? I dont know, but I dident think it did lol.

Iam sure you've done a major virus scan then?

    What were the results?

I just got over a virus, so I know how annoying it can be

You need antivirus software. If you already have antivirus software.. you need better antivirus software

    AVG Free Edition

you might want to try visiting this site too

    http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp

you can perform a free online virus scan with that.

Bruticus, Virtual Memory is hard drive space. When your computer realises it doesnt have enough Ram for what its doing (usualy when playing games), it starts storing data temporarily on your hard drive instead of in Ram. Typicaly virtual memory takes up between 1 and 2 gb on your computer. The reason its better to have more Ram than virtual memory is simply because virtual memory is much much slower, hence why the computer only uses it when it needs to.

Ok, so what I thougth was somewhat right in a way lol. I thought it was Ram centered. Thanks for clearing that up.

Avast did the job for me, and if your on a lower speed connection, the files only around 10mb.

Frankly, I let cacheman handel that stuff for me.

Panda is a free on-line virus scanner.
It has some advantages and some disadvantages over a normal virus scanner.

Since your normal virus scanner wasn't able to remove this virus it's a good idea to run panda and see if that works.

The next part is about manually removing the virus.
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = C:\WINDOWS\system32\Win1145695.exe
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    O4 - Startup: explorer.exe
    O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pol icies\System, DisableRegedit=1
These lines are put in your windows registry by the virus, and they are what make it so hard to delete the virus.
The last line indicates that the virus disables regedit, a program usually used to edit the registry, making it difficult to remove these lines as well.

Finally he says you should delete the files containing the virus by hand.
But I recommend running your virus scanner instead, so you know for sure you got the right files.
If you do want to delete these files by hand you can better rename them instead (for example "explorer.exe" -> "explorer.virus")
renaming a file like that makes sure the windows system wil never open it, and if windows stops working you can always rename them back to the original.

I have never heared about sophos anti-virus before.
Maybe it's not such a good virus scanner.
I strongly recommend Avira AntiVir Personal edition.
It's completely free and since I'm using it I have never had a virus.
Since it's free you can just try it and see if it can remove your virus.

I have always wondered, you know when you try to just del a virus, and it says its in use. What can you do in that case? Besides put it on the desktop and restart and del it as as soon as you re boot.

You could try to deactivate it in the task manager, but most virusses are smart enough to make this impossible.
Reboot in safe mode is your best option.

    Computer virusses are a pest.
They are specifically designed to be hard to delete.
A good virus scanner can automatically delete almost every virus, only new ones can sometimes be a problem.

    Same with my mother.
She always used to blame me when she got a virus, but it was actually her fault or my sisters fault most of the time since I never opened executables that I received over e-mail.

Now she lives on her own but she always calls me when things go wrong with her computer.
She always thinks it's a virus, no matter what the real problem is.
Then I have to come over and it's usually just something small like she doesn't have the latest version of Word or something.
