Can new units come from the changing weapon?

I wish to edit the weapons on a unit but not sure if it can be done. I want to keep the old unit but make a entirely new unit by changing the weapon. I am not sure if it can actually be done however if it can may someone send me a guide on how to do it. I would really appreciate it.
If it can be done is it possible to be done on free software.

It can be done. You can edit weapon stats, weapon characteristics, etc in the export_unit descr file. But if you want to change
the primary weapon from a sword to a spear however, you need to change the models I think.
It is fairly easy to add the sword as a 2ndary weapon however. One of the mod forums would be able to help you in more detail.

To do that you need to know some 3D art and the use of programs such as 3 ds max and then you can change the weapons, armor, helmets, everything.
