How to keep religious extremists away... this question will be un answered for ever
I think the only possibility is to bribe the pope right from the begining and to hope that he will like you enough and a crusade will never be called...
But if you fight against christians your reputation will drop anyway... so on long terms its not really possible but at least in early game.
Interesting question. I cannot answer it. However, I may mention the following: Playing a Crusader States late campaign, I played for a looong while without ever having a Jihad called against me. I entered into an alliance with Egypt right from the start and kept my bordering regions with them heavily garrisoned, so Egypt was never tempted to attack. Kept the relations high with gifts all the time. My theory is that this kept Jiahds from my doorstep. I did fight the Seljuks though and could expand wonderfully to the North after the Seljuks had taken the Egyptian settlements there.
So maybe an alliance with the Pope will keep a crusade away? Should be tested.
There really isn't a good way i've found to prevent a crusade being called.
but it does help giving the pope another target.. take Rome and you can pretty much guarantee where the next crusade will be.
I'm playing as a catholic faction at the moment and I would wait for a crusade to be called somewhere else.. then rush and take as many catholic factions as i could then make peace after the crusade ended.
Now I have Rome surrounded and nobody has called a crusaded on me even though I continue to take catholic factions.. and the request crusade timer has been up for a while.
I think the pope might be waiting to call a crusade because he knows if he calls one elsewhere I'm going to take Rome. but thats just speculation.. i'll let you know if 50 or so turns if a crusade still isn't called.

I don't think it matters if he likes the target or not, if the factions that calls the crusade has high relations with him the Pope will automatically authorize the crusade. Didn't you hear until now about that funny scenario when a crusade is called on a faction that is allied with the Pope and the catholics that join are excomunicated ?Happened to a few people.

Īnfrānt nu eşti atunci cānd sāngeri,
nici ochii cānd īn lacrimi ţi-s.
Adevăratele īnfrāngeri,
sunt renunţările la vis.
That's amazing.
Well, I did a search and have seen people claim the relation of the Pope and your target does matter and some people who don't. I guess no one really knows. Truly the ways of CA developers are mysterious.
Edit: If I recall right you can also bribe the Pope to get a crusade. That's probably a factor here.
