It very easily could. Make sure your power options are on full power though, if you're having graphics issues. That said, a decent cooler will run you $20 and is something you should probably have, too.

Most cooling pads are not effective, only capable of lowering the temperature by 5C or so.
If you do have overheating problem, and you're sure a better cooling from outside can help (try mechanical fan first), get one which allows you to attach fans and adjust fan location manually - and NEVER buy those with one big fan (utterly useless). It wouldn't be cheap - The one I'm using costs about $100 with 6 fans attached:

It's the only thing that can keep my Dell Vostro 3700 from overheating with graphics chip running at 100% for hours (I forced the clock), lowering the chip's temperature by 15-20C. The fans are weak though despite of their price; custom ones would do much better. You'd also need one USB hub with external power supply.
Yeah i have an Asus, but this thing is a monster. An i7 processor, a GTX460M graphics card, 8.00 GB of Ram but this thing overheats like a mother firetrucker. When im playing shogun, i can only feel the back of my laptop for 15 seconds tops. I can play shogun on very high, but what always kills me is the campaign map and the options that you check (light boom, HDR, v-syncing, exc.) If i get my computer down to a certain temperature, will i be able to playy with those options?
