    Default "Connection Error" problem

Edit: Connection Issue has been fixed.

Every time I try to play Third Age Total War I get this message...

"It was not possible to connect to the update server. Please check that you have an active internet connection and that your proxy settings are configured correctly. Click on the Settings button to configure them."

Just by reading it it doesn't not sound like it is the mod's fault, but it only occurs when I try to start up Third Age Total War. As far as I can tell with out actually playing the mod that it was installed correctly (I use steam). Although my steam game folders are saving to a different source other than the original steam folder (I am not sure if that makes a difference). And it is needless to say that I have internet connection. So I assume that leaves the proxy settings, but I have never had to adjust them in the past when I had Third Age total war installed and I am still unaware of how to proceed.

Does anyone have a fix for my problem?

are you running the kingdoms expansion? have you ran a search on the general med 2 forums for how to get mods working with steam? steam is a right pain in the ass to get TW mods running, or so i have had in my exp. its defo a steam error since the mod has no reason whatsoever to be 'connecting' anywhere and in my Non-Steam version i havent seen that problem. i have however seen tons of little annoying issues with my steam copy which led me to pick a hard retail copy of the game up.

Yes I am running the Kingdoms Expansion. And I followed the installation instructions, also I have installed this mod in the past and followed the same instructions with out a hitch.

*Edit: I can hear the message when i play the other Medieval 2 mods and game, but it does not kick me out of the game.

I have also been looking at the FAQ and what ever I do doesn't seem to help the slightest.

The message is a Medieval Launcher message. And the more I look into it I think the launcher message error and TATW not playing are 2 different problems. Maybe somebody can help me there?

Also telling Steam to not auto-update didnt help unfortunately.

Hmm, this isn't a Steam message is it? Perhaps you could try telling Steam to not auto-update M2TW Kingdoms.

Do you mean the default/vanilla launcher? You should probably try completely uninstalling and reinstalling. If you're running Windows 7 or Vista check here. Disable UAC, then uninstall, then check and delete any remaining files in the virtual store, then reinstall. You might also try Squid's Steam mod launcher tool if you're not already using it. (tutorial here.)

I believe I do use the vanilla launcher. Uninstalling and reinstalling and disabling the UAC did not work. And TATW has an installer that will put it straight into the folder and all I had to do was change folder names so the mod runs through that mod's start up.

Well, I'm not sure what else to suggest. I think it is most likely some problem not related to the TATW mod, so I'm moving this thread to the General M2TW Technical Help forum. Hopefully someone there will have more suggestions for you.

My main bet is that you lack some .dll file in that TATW folder that Steam uses to check for compatibility (read as DRM ).

It probably isn't the fault of the mod or the mod makers. This really smells of file micromanagement. I'm betting you'll have to find the updater library file for Steam and add it to the TATW file. I'll look for a link and will try to add it below.

It does. Pain in the ass but it does matter.

@anyone who cares: Alright - I can't find a link I trust as I don't use Steam. So I need some help from those that look in these threads - whether you're a regular contributor or not it does not matter. I'm looking for a Steam.dll file (I think). I want to know if you have some random .dll file in your Steam M2 folder and your Kingdoms folder that you may think would not be installed with a third-party mod. I don't think that whomever made TATW really coded for Steam inclusion. I could be wildly wrong though.

My bet is that if this hypothetical file were added to your TATW folder you'd stop seeing Steam errors. I hope I'm right and that someone rides in for the rescue. Good luck!

Logged into your computer as Administrator?

Can you at least get the launcher to pull up and list all the options including Third Age?

    What are you missing, then?

I must have done something wrong when looking for a solution because now I cant even start the launcher with out Steam saying it encountered an unspecified error. Also I have to ask for permission to make changes to any of the files. I cant seem to find the posts where I made all the adjustments.

Edit: found the threads that I used maybe those might undo my current step backwards

Delete the clinentregistry.blob in the Steam folder, then try it.

You have to be logged in as Administrator to make most of this happen.

With your last post, have you taken ownership of your drive, yet? If not. http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=397636 from the C: drive icon any any other drive you have. It cures a lot of ills with Vista and Win 7. And you have to be logged in as Administrator to do it.

Im currently back to square one as stated in my original post. Does anyone have any ideas.

Launcher message still a problem and Third age will just quit as I try to start it. Ive downloaded the re-release as well and still nothing.

Edit: I have downloaded the alternate Launcher for Medieval 2/kingdoms and I still get kicked out of the game as soon as I start it. Something is wrong with mod or something because I have tried everything I could find.

You could try www.steampowered.com and install the Steam client before logging in. This will let you know if you can get there from here.
