Rome Total War Crashes when I start custom battles

It used to work, and it still works in campaign mode, but every time I try to start a custom battle, it crashes as soon as I hit the start button. My computer is definitely advanced enough to handle the graphics (I can have huge battles in campaign mode), and I tried lowering the graphics for a custom battle, but it still didn't work.
The version of the game I have is Rome Total War: Gold Edition downloaded from amazon.com, which has rome total war and barbarian invasion. custom battles work in barbarian invasion, just not total war. Help?

The same thing happens to me. When I Start a Custom Battle it just stops and a thing comes up and says "Rome Total War has stopped working." Im re-installing it as Im posting this. Lets hope it works.

I tried it out but it failed to work. I made it go on "RECOMENDED" Settings and..guess what... IT WORKED! !

I tried it on recommended settings, and it still didn't work for me and now it is happening to me in the campaigns too
