Default My AAR (very long too)

Ok so this is my first AAR and yeah its pretty detailed and this is only the 1st Turn of my AAR so..... Ok just some background I tweaked this game a little (or a lot) reduced support cost, eliminated those pre-marius pansy units, and gave myself an already developed empire so I could get to the conquest right off the bat.

I thought it would be kind of cool if I wrote in a Dispatch form.

Well i must Admit Evan_Kikla it certainly is different to what we usually get. I like the idea of the dispatches though it does get a tiny bit confusing towards the end.

That was quite a tragedic battle you had there, complete destruction of a legion by the Gauls

Got to say not the best start to a campaign though. What difficulty are you playing at? Keep it up though, nice to see a bit of variety.
    Congrats

Use the "Prt Scr" key. Pictures will appear in TGA format in the folder labeled "TGAs" in the RTW directory. I use ADopePhotoshop to convert them to JPG or other and you can also do effects.

Ok update on the Conquest of the Po valley.

I'm going to do this both 3rd Person and in Dispatch form, makes it easier to write.

Following the massacre at the First battle of Patavium Romans look at the "Northern Question" (the Celts of the Po Valley) in a completly new light. No longer are the Gauls seen as a horde of Barbarians with no forsight or strategic thinking, overnight they have become the greatest threat to the safety of the Roman Republic. Calls from the people force the Senate into action.
These are some of the surviving dispatches from the following months.

    July 6, 265 bc

To: Supreme Roman Arms Commander, Conselor and General, Flavius the Munerator, Arretium
From: The Senate and People of Rome, Rome

We hereby inform you that the Senate and People have Rome have authorised the raising of 2 new Legions to combat the Celtic Forces north of the Po River and the reinstatement of the frm. Appius Legion as after they have recoverd the lost Legionary Eagle. The Legions will be at your disposal in one year.

To: All Commanders of Roman forces in the Po Valley
From: Supreme Roman Arms Commander, Conselor and General, Flavius the Munerator, Arretium

Due to the recent events that have taken place North of the Po I have taken it upon myself to command all combat operations in the Po Valley. All Garison Commanders are therefore order to deploy your forces in defence of Roman possesions in the valley.

To: The Senate and People of Rome, Rome
From: Supreme Roman Arms Commander, Conselor and General, Flavius the Munerator, Arretium

I have taken it upon myself to command the upcoming operations in the Po Valley. Due to my involvment in the oncoming operations I have suspended all other offensive operations in Sicily and across the Adriatic untill the Norther Question has been resolved.

Skirmishing took place through the next year and into the winter of 264 bc with no major offensive operations being conducted by either the Northern Celts or the Roman forces. By summer 263 Roman forces were in position to recomence offensice operations in the Po Valley.

    July 16, 263 bc.

To: Captian Caius of the Auxillary Cavlary, Ariminum
From: Gen. Flavius Commander of Operations in the Po Valley, Arretium

You are orderd to scout the paths leading to Patavium and the surrounding area in prelude to offenisve operations in the area. You are then to move west and scout all areas on the Western fronteir East of Mediolanium. Engage enemy forces as you see fit. You will put yourself under Gen. Dio's command when he arrives with the Dio Legion.

To: All Legion Commanders of the Flavius, Dio, and Plautius legions
From: Gen. Flavius Commander of Operations in the Po Valley, Arretium

Offensive operations are will commence on July 19, 263 bc.

    July 18

To: Gen. Flavius Commander of Operations in the Po Valley, Arretium
From: Captian Caius of the Auxillary Cavlary, West frontier, Po Valley

Scouted areas around Patavium, heavy concentration of enemy forces camped inside the city. Small warbands roam around the city. All forces seem to be commanded by a man called Cadyern of Duranius.
Scouted areas East of Mediolanium, possible large body of troops farther west, small warbands roam the frontier.
Engaged and destroyed Warband of infantry and Cavarly totaly 149 Celts. Sufferd no Casualties.

To: Gen. Dio, Commander of the Dio Legion, Po Valley
From: Gen. Flavius Commander of Operations in the Po Valley, Arretium

When operations commence on the 19 July 263 bc you will secure the Western Frontier and gaurd the West flanks of the Flavius and Plautius legions. Do not commence any offensive operations directed at Mediolanium.

To: Gen. Plautius, Commander of the Plautius Legion, Po Valley
From: Gen. Flavius Commander of Operations in the Po Valley, Arretium

You will march on East of the Flavius Legion and support it in combat operations.

The Summer Campaign of 263 bc went smoothly. By 21 July Gen. Dio had secured the western frontier. Gen. Flavius led his legion Northwards toward Patavium encountering little resistance. Supporting his right General Plautius marched Northwards and met little resitstance also.
Gen. Plautius arrived at Patavium at dusk on July 23. By noon July 24 he had deployed his legion on the South East wall of the city. Gen. Flavius arrived at noon July 24 and deployed his legion on the South and South West walls.
Secretly Cadyern of Duranis was Mustering Warbands from the surrounding area to assault the siege force. Flavius was caught unprepared and by suprise at 10:00 am August 12 when his scouts reported that roughly 2,000 Celts were less than 5 km away to the SW. At the same time reports came in from the siege entrenchments that the Celts in Patavium could be preparing a possible breakout directed SW.

    (This is the Battle)

    To: Gen. Plautius
From: Gen. Flavius, Commander of Operations, Po Valley, Flavius Legion

You are immediatly Orderd to bring your legion up in support of the Flavius legion against possible Celtic Agression from the City and from the South West. Make Haste, time is vital.

Flavius Deployed his Legion facing the SW to meat the oncoming force from that directon. The Plautius Legion marched to cover his rear against the Force sallying from the city. Plautius did not move fast enough and at 11:30 Flavius realised he was surrounded and isolated from the Plautius Legion. Luckily the force from the SW was moving in small bands of hundreds. He immediatly led an attack and routed the closest bads with half his force.

    12:00 pm

    To: Gen. Flavius, Flavius Legion
    From: Gen. Plautius, Plautius Legion

Under heavy attack from the North and East. Overwhelming Celtic Forces. Trying to deploy legion. Need Support.

Flavius, anticipating this, dispatched his reserves, his cavalry, and his archers, to aid the Plautius Legion. The detatchment under Captain Spurius engaged Celtic forces moving Westwads to engage the Plautius Legion.

    To: Gen. Flavius
    From: Captian Spurius

Engaged celtic forcer moving westwards. Attacked from the South. Turned they're flank and and am driving them Westwards towards the Plautius Legion, intend on linking up with Plautius.

Gen. Plautius's command was now severly threatend. His Cohorts, which had been in marching order, were being engaged and destroyed one at a time as they moved to engage. Captain Spurius had taken off pressure from Plautius's right but the 2,000 celts bearing donw on him from the north threatend to destroy him. In an attempt to buy time while his rear Cohorts deployed Plautius through himself into the midst of the Battle and was killed, possibly saving his Legion from destruction.

    To: Gen. Flavius, Flavius Legion
From: Captain Marcus, Deputy Commander, Plautius Legion

Plautius is dead. Have taken command of the Legion. Await orders.

    To: Captian Marucs
    From: Gen. Flavius

Link up with Spurius and drive Celtic forces North back towards the City. Will come up behind you once the South has been cleard of Celts.

To: Captain Spurius, detatchment, Flavius Legion
From: Captain Marcus, Commander, Plautius Legion

Form a battle line on my left and Drive Celtic Forces Northward.

Spurius linked up with Marcus and formed a line on Marcus's left. What once almost destroyed the Plautius Legion now gave it new momentum. With his left secured, Marcus drove the legion forwar in a quasi-battle line with the wait of 900 Legionairs focuse on a front just 400 yds wide. Cadyern was killed during the attack and the Plautius legion drove the surviving Celtic forced back into Patavium.
The Celts lost over 3,500 men. The defenders of Patavium numberd only 500. The Romans lost over roughly 900 men, 778 of those were from Plautius's legion - which numberd originaly 1,403.
Flavius and Marcus settledown for the winter. On December 12, 263 bc. Flavius launched a combined attack on Patavium with Marcus. Marcus was killed in the action and Captain Spurius was given command of the Plautius Legion, which was dispatched to Ariminum to rest and regroup. Patavium and the Appius Legion's Eagle was taken, at the cost of an addition 200 casualties, briging the Campaign of 263 to a close with 1,100 Legionaris killed.

I like your creativity Evan, its a different type of story and it is well done. Good to see everyone varying the story types. Maybe this will eventually cause Revan the Instigator to jump back in the ring of scribes! I'll be issuing forth with an account of Appius Laco, the fat spy from Lilybaeum soon....

P.S. Evan I really liked your detail accuracy such as Po Valley, etcetera, good detail again.

I might do a Campaign thread for my Seleucid Campaign on Lusted's Terrae Expundagae (sp?). Though that hardly seems like it should go in this forum, especially with Lt being so strict a moderator. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until i'm bored with Lusted's and go back to SPQR.

Once again a brilliant piece of writing Evan_Kikla. You are truly blessed with praise from Revan. I want more man! Your detail and variety is again great and flowing.

Hadrain I look forward to your account of Appius Laco, the fat spy from Lilybaeum, should be a good one.

I agree with you here Hadrian, perhaps we can lure Revan back into the business.

Revan mate, you should be proud of what you have created.

Ok this is the final part in Chapter 1, but don't worry, the fighting will move to no and exotic places like Sicily, Greece, the Alps, and North Africa.

I wonder if any of you guys noticed some of the stratagie's I'v been using. Flavius has become adept in using large bodies of light Cavalry, they reall can kick ass if you use them right. Place a force infront of your legions, attack and kill off a couple hundred of the enemy, then move your legion in for the kill. Works a lot and saves tons of lives since you don't have to fight an extra 800 Gauls. Ok I've said enough here's the final part of Chapter 1.

The the early parts of 262 bc was a hectic one for Flavius. Replacements had to be recriuted and deployed among the legions, scouts had to be deployed, and the legions had to be set up for an offensive. Come Spring and summer the 3 Po Valley legions would march on Mediolanium and complete their conquest of the Po Valley.

In March 262 bc, with the ground hardly thawed, Cavalry forces began their scouting and harasment operations. Leading the Cavalry Auxillias, who were enjoying their role as some of the most respected cavalry in the Roman Army, was the famed Captain Spurius of the fmr. Plautius Legion (Now renamed the Licinius Legion after its new commander Gen. Licinius).

To: Gen. Flavius Commander of Operations in the Po Valley, Arretium
From: Captain Spurius, Cav. Aux detacthment I, West Frontier, Po Valley

Have completed reconissance of enemey forces in the Vicinty of Mediolanium. Report: 1,900+ currenty within short marching distance of the city, suspected to be more. Enemy forces are under the command of Maglocus of Lemenom. Have engaged Celtic force of infantry and Cavarly 800 strong. Sufferd 171 dead. Killed 600+. Withdrawing to Patavium.

On June 3rd Flavius began the Summer Offensive of 262. 3 legions, the Dio, the Licinius, and his own - the Flavius, marched directly on Mediolanium. The battle of Mediolanium began on June 6 when Gen. Dio engaged a small Detatchment of Celtic forces 7 km SW of the City. The skrimish soon escalated when the detatchment Commander Captain Aldcolorabus was reinforced personaly by Maglous's force of 1,600.

    June 6th
    9:45

To: Gen. Dio, Dio Legion, Mediolanium Station
    From: Forward Scouts, NW

Inform you, large body of Celtic infanty marching SW 5 km from your position. 1,600. Under Command Maglocus.

To: Gen. Licinius, Licinius Legion, Mediolanium Station
From: Gen. Dio, Dio Legion, Mediolanium Station

    Request your presence. Maglocus attacking.

Licinius Arrived on the field at 10:30 am and began moving NW in line of battle with Dio. Dio engaged Captian Aldcolorabus at 11:00 am and routed him with 42 Casualties sustained. 452 Celts were killed. By the time Maglocus arrived the Romans had command of the field with 3,000 inf., he withdrew North of the Mediolanium
The engagment was not large nor Strategic, but the Roman Senate and People hailed it as a great victory, because of this Julianius Dio was adopted into the Roman nobility. Dio no doubt celebrated again when Flavius announced Dio to be his succsesor to the position of Supreme Commander of Roman Arms.
Dispite the all the celebration and fanfair in Rome the Battle of Mediolanium was far from Over. Gen. Dio laid siege to Mediolanium's SE wall late on June 6. The morning of June 7 brough the Licinius Legion which then proceeded to besieging the E wall of Mediolanium. On June 8 Flavius arrived in the vicinty NE of Mediolanium and engaged Maglocus.

    June 9

    11:00
To: Gen. Licinius, Licinius Legion, Mediolanium Station
From: Gen. Flavius, Flavius Legion, Mediolanium Station

Orderd to support Flavius Legion attack on Maglocus. Come up on rear and wait for Orders.

To: All infantry Commanders, Flavius Legion
    From: Gen. Flavius

    Form Line of Battle

To: All Cav Commanders, Flavius Legion
    From: Gen Flavius

Place and conceal yourself in the forest North. Do not move untill orders.

    12:00

    To: Gen. Flavius, Flavius Legion
    From: Gen. Licinus, Licinius Legion

My forces are on the field and request orders

    To: Gen. Licinius, Licinius Legion
    From: Gen. Flavius, Flavius Legion

    Attack.

    To: All Flavius legion Commanders
    From: Gen. Flavius

    Attack.

Never one for fancy tactics, Flavius through his entire commande into a head on Assault. The Legions engaged first driving the Celts back but the battle climaxed when the Flavius Legion's Cavalry broke out of the forest and drove into the Celts Left Flank, quickly overwhelming it. The Celt line finaly collapsed when Flavius personaly lead a charge into they're rear. Flavian Cavarly then mercilessly pursued the surviging celts. Maglocus was killed and his command sufferd 1,400 out of 1,600 casuatlies. 376 out of 3,000 legionaries died in the battle.

Mediolanium was finaly assaulted and captured on September 13 with 63 casualties sufferd by the Dio Legion. With winter approaching Flavius sent out one last patrol of the territory West of Mediolanium, results shocked him:

To: Gen. Flavius, Po Valley Operations Commander, Mediolanium
From: Captain Decius, Cavarly detatchment II, West of Mediolanium

Large force of Celts marching East. 2000. Expect force comgin from E in early winter.

Flavius immediatly deployed his legions West of the city inprepartaion for the Celtic attack. When early winter came and gone and there was no attack. Scouts could not locate the Celtic force. Assuming they had withdrawn Flavius withdrew his legions East of Mediolanium. In an ambush on December 23 the Gauls attacked his colum from the North.

    To: Gen. Licinius, Licinius Legion
    From: Gen. Flavius, Flavius Legion

Urgent. Need Support. Ambush. Orderd to move fast as possible.

In a blinding snowstorm Flavius through himself and his personaly bodygaurds into the Celtic attack and held it long enough for Licinius to drive his mean 10 km in support. The Celtic Attack was stopped, and then reversed at Flavius counterattack and destroyed the last Celtic Army in the Po Valley. His batterd Legion had sufferd 500 dead.
The ambush and Battle of Tetellus (as it became known as for its proximity to the battlefield) marked the end of major military conflicts in the Po Valley. Flavius would return home a hero, where his predessesor Appius had failed he had succeded. The price was high thous. In 3 years of fighting 2,200 Legionarias had lost there life, another 1,300 from the Massacre of the Appius legion one year before that. Given his victory over the Po Celts Flavius reopend Combat operations throughout the empire.

I like how you do the letters, back and forth between commanders. I'll have to remember that if I ever start writing again.

Sorry its been a while, I had a great campaign story but the game CTD and I didn't have a recent save file. Oh well I learned my lesson: here is Chapter II: War with Greece (by Greece I mean the Greeces and Macedonians)

    Chapeter II: War with Greece

    The Salona Incident
    July 3-5 261 bc

In 261 bc an incident occured in Salona that would end up bringing the Roman Republic and the States of Greece into war with one another. Roman Diplomat Julius Graccus was on a diplomatic mission in the trade city of Salona, for reasons that are unclear he was Murderd. The Roman Senate Demanded that the Murderes be etradited for Crucifixtion outside of Rome, when the State of Macedon refused the situation escalated into a large scale military biuld up.

To: Gen. Dio Operations Commander, Po Valley, Ariminum
From: The Senate and People of Rome

Following the recent incidents surrounding the situation in Salona, the Senate has agreed to raise 6 new Legions, Supreme Commander of Roman Arms Flavius the Munerator has decided to deploy 3 of these new legions to your station.

The situation escalated even farther in September of that year when the crew of a wrecked Roman trade ship was brutaly Murderd outside of Apollonia. In Response the Senate halted all trade with Macedon. As the new Roman Legions were raised Macedon began its deploying its Army to terretories in Illyrium where Roman possesions could be reached through the Po Valley.
The Conflict was between Rome and Macedonia, but the Greeks made the jump to war; in Winter 261 bc, Greece began blockading Roman ports. The reason why the Greeks enterd the conlfict is unclear, but to possibilities are likely, either Greece though Macedonia was going to win and wanted a peace of Roman teretories, or the Greeks were weary over the extensive military biuld up acrooss the Adriatic. Either way one of the bloodies episodes of Roman history was about to begin.

    The Campaign of 259-258

To: The Senate and People of Rome
From: Supreme Roman Arms Commander Flavius the Munerator, Croton

I have decided grand stratagy of the upcoming Invasion of Greece. With 3 legions I will land at Apollonia, take the city, move on Larrisa and Ambrachia. I have appointed Gen. Dio Command of the future operations in Illyrium, with 5 legions he will invade Southwards and Capture Salona and destroy all enemy forces in Illyrium. He will then link up with my forces in Central Greece and we will both move towards the Macedonian capital. I await your confirmation of my plan.

To: Julianius Dio, Po Valley Operations Commander, Dio Legion, Po Valley
From: Supreme Roman Arms Commander Flavius the Munerator, Croton

You are orderd to take command of the upcoming offensive into Macedonian territory. 5 legions will be at your disposal. You will invade Illyiria, take Segestica, then proceed to move South towards Salona, take the city then Link up with my forces somewhere in the Vicinity of Ambracia.

On April 23 the invasion began. Gen. Flavius lands with 3 legions under the Command of himself, Lethos Cincius, and his new protegee Kaeso Fulvius, former governor of the Scilian Terretotis, at Apollonia. Fulvius lays siege to the city while Flavius moves north to block any relief attempts from Ambracia, Cincius moves south to blocak any attempts for relief from Larissa.
Simultanesusly Gen Dio and his 5 legions commanded by (in Marching Order) himself, Gen. Curius, Gen. Licinius, Gen. Macro, and Gen. Philo, march East towards Segestica. Dio does not know it yet but he is about to engage in the Largest battles he has seen to date.
On July 3 Captain Herius of the Cav Aux, locates the Macedonian Army outside Segestica

    To:Gen Dio, Operations Commander, Illyrium

Have spotted Enemy Army. Strenthg 6000+. Engaged and destroyed half of a Macedonian detatchment; 800 killed 124 dead.

[I]To the south another Macedonian force of 1,500 threatens to cut Dio's force off from Patavium, grudingly he is forced to dispatch Gen. Philo and his legion to deal with the detatchment. With 4 legions Gen. Dio begins the battle with the Macedonian Army. The largest engagement will occur at a small village called Vurunum.[I]

    To: Gen. Curius
    From: Gen. Dio

Gen. Curius I have engaged enemy forces under Gen. Damasos, strength: 3,000, you are orderd to bring your legion up to support my attack at Vurunum.

To: All Illyrium Legion Commanders (besided Gen. Philo)
    From: Gen Dio

You are orderd to march to Vurunum.

Gen. Dio engaged Damasos at 9:25 in the Morning. By 10:15 Gen. Curius had arrived. Damasos began the battle with a ful scale attack on Curius. The Attack by-passed Dio's legion but in a show of Stupidity the Macedonias, while crossing acros Gen. Dio's legion, exsposed there sheildless flank to Roman arrows and Pilla, Damasos payed heavily for that mistake.

    To: Gen. Dio
    From: Gen. Curius

Need support, under heavy attack. Moving right wing around Macedonian Flank.

    To: Gen. Curius
    From: Gen. Dio

Hold your ground. Flank the Macedonians left and push them eastwards. Have dispatchted by reserves to form a lin at Macedonian rear.

Gen. Dio extended his line South and West. In a textbook flank attack Gen. Curius turned the left flank of the Macedonians and drove them into Dio's reserves. Damasos was surrounded and butcherd.
The Battle was not over yet, reinforcments from Segestica dn Macedonian encampments North of the City had arrived. Gen. Dio formed a new line and orderd Cinsius to do the same. The new recriuts however, thought differently, in there bloodlust the lost formation and charged the Macedonian Phalanx. Forced to back the attack or risk loosing a legion, Dio through all his forces into it. Fighting was tough against the impentrable wall of spears, but Gen. Dio in person led a cavarly chage into the Phalanx's flank, and so started a merciless butchering of the fleeing Macedionian army. The Macedonians lost 2,800 men out of 3,000. Nearly half there entire Illyrian Army. The Romans lost 333 dead including Gen. Circius, who dies the day after the battle due to an arrow wound to the stomack. Gen.

Dio quickly laid siege to Segestica dispatching Gen. Philo and Gen. Licinius to engage enemy forces south of Segestica. After a butal battle in a heavy forest Gen. Licinius gains the uperhand and drives the Macedonian Flank. The Macedonians however recover and withdraw with Command intact. 1,000 Romans die, out of 3,000. 1,300 Macedonian out of 3,000 are killed. Licinius engages the Macedonians again. Destroying the rest of the Army at a loss of 700. And so ends the Battle of Vurnum and Segestica.
