watched the 1993 version of 'Stalingrad', and i loved it. Highly recommend it.
Can anyone else recommend me any good films on ww2 from the perspective of the Germans, such as 'Downfall'?

I love the Misfit Brigade and The Iron Cross. Hardly masterpieces, but certainly enjoyable films![]()
I heard Das Boot is good. Never saw it though.
Der Untergang was one of the few movies in my life that made me cry...
as strange as that is
Umm... der grosse koenig ?
Das Boot is great. Make sure to watch the extended version (4 hours long). The Untergang is also a great movie. There is also one movie that I like that is not about the war per se but is very interesting, which is called Night of the Generals. I also recommend The desert fox: The story of Erwinn Rommel. I will try to remember some more.

Triumph des Willens (Triumph of the Will). It's not a modern film, but definitely worth watching. It gives you a real glimpse of Nazi Germany. It was made to be a propaganda film though, so one must always keep this in mind. You can find the whole thing on Youtube here.
I know its not specifically German, but Letter From Iwo Jima does a magnificent job of portraying Axis troops sympathetically, without glorifying them.

Valkyrie. Yes it stars Tom Cruise, and yes it takes plenty of liberties with the actual history.
However, it does offer through film a glimpse into the hearts and minds of German soldiers and citizens who were faced with the dilemma of being true to their country, or doing what they thought was right.
Mein Krieg ( a documentary film featuring amateur movies made by german soldiers as they invaded France or Russia, it's a must see for all Whemacht fans)

I remember seeing old people come out of the premiere of Der Untergang with tears in their eyes. A true masterpiece. See, whenever a movie is heartfelt, with passion, the result is more often than not truly remarkable. Das Boot, Stalingrad, Der Untergang. For me this is the German WWII Trilogy.
The Eagle Has Landed (1976) is told from a German PoV and has some sympathetic German characters in it. I am surprised that nobody mentioned it yet.

Das Boot for the win.
I liked Das Boot a lot. For some reason I liked the bit where they torpedoed a burning ship after it had been there for ages and were shocked when they saw that crewmen were still on it. I also liked the bit where one crew man went crazy but got better. It must take men with a steel mentality to sit in a coffin like tube while waiting for potential doom 24\7.
