Well, two spring to mind for me, but they aren't just vocalists, they are frontmen (as Mercury was)
Maynard James Keenan (Tool, A Perfect Circle)
Has an excellent singing voice, and has written some of the best lyrics i've ever heard. Also, has the arrogance and flamboyance to make a proper front man.
Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin)
Plant wrote the book on being a rock singer.

Female Mariah Carey
Male Frank Sinatra
I have nothing against the womens movement. Especially when Im walking behind it.
Male voices
Leonard Cohen
"I was born like this, I had no choice. I was born with the gift of a golden voice" (Tower of Song)
Kurt Wagner (Lambchop)
Stuart A. Staples (Tindersticks)
Paolo Conte
All dark, heavy, melancholic voices. Not the best singers, but there's the great 'voice' making up for that.
Female voices
Natalie Merchant (former 10 000 Maniacs)
I fell in love with that voice.
Yma Sumac
A true Phenomenon! This Andes-lady sings over a span of 4 octaves and is said to have sung the highest note ever to be recorded by a female voice. But more then reading and knowing this (there is a whole legend to go with it), you should experience it. Hearing that span in one song is bewildering.

Avril Lavigne, yes, I've already had one member give me the one eyebrow raised treatment over this, but she has a beautiful passionate voice. And no, i am not the new ckerr, I don't love her in every way
I've said it before, and I'm going to say it again: Cee-Lo (of Goodie Mob and Gnarls Barkley.
Because he has a great (special) singing (and rapping) voice, and he has made some of the best songs I've ever heard![]()
Freddie Mercury had an amazing vocal range, nobody has even come close to himEddie Reader is also seriously good.

Try Frankie Valli or Mariah Carey. Mariah has a 7 octave range, Freddie cant touch that.Freddie Mercury had an amazing vocal range, nobody has even come close to himEddie Reader is also seriously good.

It's not just about the range of the voice, it's the sound and feel of it. It's uniqueness. As for Mariah Carey she sound like she finished 3rd in World Idol, but Freddie sings with passion, anger, joy, energy and power. He felt what he sang, he didn't just concentrate on showing off his voice. I'll give you an example: Ozzy isn't a great singer, but he's definitely a great vocalist.
Male Vocalists: Freddie Mercury, Neal Morse, Maynard, Jřrn Lande
Female Vocalists: Tori Amos, Deborah Harry, Fiona Apple

The 7 octave range of Mariah Carey is a myth. She can hit notes in the 7th octave (by US standards, G#7) but her range is 5 octaves at best. Which is outstanding, don't get me wrong.Originally Posted by Rush Limbaugh

I once listened to a Counting Crows live-recording, where the singer starts a sort of squeeling at one point. I had to cover my ears and since that thay I live in fear for hearing it again. Counting Crows-fans seem to enjoy that part though, because it's very emotional. It's all about emotion.

True but she has full control in those 5 octaves. I dont know of anyone else who does and the awards I posted speak for themselves. difference is, Freddie can actually sing![]()
It's not just his range, it was his ability to change from a really heavy rock vocal to operatic in the same song. Truly amazing vocalist.
Another interesting voice is Emiliana Torrini who sang Gollum's song in the LOTR films.

Now show me Freddies awards and where he was voted as having the best voice? Only the Beatles and Elvis can approach such a resume. I hate rap but she makes it sound good when used in conjuction with her singing though I still prefer her early work.List of Mariah Carey awards
