After rifling through a number of other scrolls you come across a short history of the Maester's life, seemingly written in his own hand...
History:
Not much is known about Maester Celestiyn's, born Celestiyn Snow, father, other than he bedded a whore. Celestiyn Snow was the son of a White Harbour whore and spent his early years serving drinks whilst the brothels patrons waited their 'turn'. All this changed at the age of ten when a group of singers entered the brothel, the leader enjoyed Celestiyn wit and natural humour that he offered to take him on-board when they left, the mother who was already struggling with five other bastards readily agreed. So growing up he travelled around Westeros venturing up and down, accompanying these singers who played for the next nights accommodation and food. That was until they happened to be staying at a brothel in Oldtown, not their first visit by any means, when an Archmaester of the Citadel, who "was inspecting the wares" came over and talked with Celestiyn. The Archmaester, who knows what beheld him, offered to take Celestiyn on as an Acolyte, who agreed after a few 'negotiations'. Truth be told Celestiyn was getting tired of the travelling life, and so after giving a brief thanks to the group of singers who had become his family over the years, he packed up his small collection of belongings and headed to the Citadel.
With that his true purpose in life became apparent, well for him anyway. He proved to have a sharp mind, but also and impatient one and was often criticised by other Maesters for his haste. However, that did not discourage him and he soon achieved his copper chain, for the study of the histories. This is his favourite area of study, and continued to require a number of other chains, notably in silver for the study of medicine and healing, yellow gold for the study of economics, and valyrian steel for magic - the last of which earned him the disdain of the Citadel, save a few of the Maesters who were also competent in that area of study, as well as the respective Archmaester. Like most he remembers his night of vigil, and too failed to light the black candle, thus having to spend the long night in darkness.
Nevertheless he contiuned in his studies and at the age of forty achieved a rod of copper, and thus became the Archmaester of History for the Citadel. So for four happy years Celestiyn continued his studies in the histories, and still occasionally dabbled in the study of magic. He would pay visits to the brothel where he was adopted into the order, after all he is only a man. Celestiyn had also taken on a few Acolytes, two of which were now Maesters. A lass, all good things must come to and end, and in his fourth year of Archmaester he was either forced, or resigned, from his seat on the conclave, and in the process lost his right to the title of Archmaester, so somehow managed to retain his copper rod.
What caused this event to happen only he knows, but it is a truth he has chosen to forget, and thus it would take one of great skill and patience to unravel the story from him. Celestiyn, however, seemed little phased by his demotion, so to speak, and is now yearning to heard back up north, back home. It is rumoured that the several major houses of the North are in need of a Maester, but where he will end up still remains a mystery. The question will arise though, will he remain loyal to the order that shamed him, or form stronger bonds with the House he is bound to serve? Only time will tell...
After that you come across little else, apart from a copper rod, located at the very bottom of the chest...
