Can't get into Android Market

It's really annoying me but ever since I got my Android Sony Ericsson, I haven't been able to get at Android Market. I get as far as the Account Setup and it either tells my details are wrong or, when I make sure they're right, it says it can't connect and tells me to "Connect to WiFi". I'm creating a new Gmail account now to try and get this sorted now but I've a feeling it's just going to tell me to connect to WiFi again. Does anyone know how I can solve this problem?

Can't get into Android Market.
Can't login to Android Market.
Can't get into Android Market (2nd iteration).

From here it looks like something isn't syncing well and you need to delve into your various Google apps and reset to the baseline settings. It's the best I can offer you but hopefully you like to read webpages.

Looked at all them and the general idea seems to be that you have to delete my data from Android Market, but my phone won't let me do that

Edit: Tried a whole load of different fixes, none of them work. Don't even seem to make the slightest difference

Why won't it let you delete the data? Is Market not listed under the applications? One thing to note is that Android Market has been renamed to Play. So check if Play is listed in the applications.

I found it and deleted it but it still comes up with the same message, "Can't connect to data server" or something similar. I've tried a few different things now

Ok. Do you have a 3g/4g signal?

Something else that was mentioned was that the sync between the contacts and various accounts and apps would cause this problem. Is there an option to turn off the contacts synchronization between accounts?
