So after starting a campaign with the Seleucid's I was confronted with Ptolemy iv of Hellenistic Egypt. After defeating him in battle and managing to head into Egypt gaining much territory until I was stopped short of Alexandria. It occurred to me that if i was beaten by Ptolemy iv then my entire southern flank would be exposed. So have you ever lost this battle or won and what was the consequences?

When playing with the Ptolemaic Empire, i don't play the Raphia battle, since the seleucid army just retreats and i can then focus on strengthening Egypt proper and building a decent army.

The player should never lose with superior cav and cataphract elephants.

If the player loses Raphia, I imagine it is something of a setback, on hard settings. That said, I didn't lose a battle yet, lol.

You didn't play 2.5 yet, either.

Is 2.5 supposed to be incredibly hard or something?

I have yet to face a setting that can keep me down.

have played 2-3 turns with the sleucids and i can say that Jerusalem immediatly falls in to enemy hands and that it will take some time untill ive got back a decent army to kick those egyptians

but i was playing 1-turn so maybe thats it was more difficult for me to raise a big army

It happens for me when I usually push my luck a little bit too far. With Rome I tried to take on two Roman rebel stacks near Capua. I thought if I attacked one in the nights I would be able to defeat it, and then face the other one the next morning. Unfortunately this wasn't quite the case. The enemy had the high ground and more experienced troops. I tried to destroy his cavalry on the left. It didn't go to plan, the cavalry routed. I then tried to push up the hill in and just fight my way through with a larger concentration of troops in the center. The enemy hit me in the flanks. I retreated down the hill and tried to rethink. I'd lost half of my cohorts and didn't have the manpower to take the day. I withdrew and the next turn these stacks besieged Rome. Luckily Publius Cornelius Scipio arrived from Spain. But it got VERY close.

If you're playing on 1 turn i imagine losing Raphia could be a pretty big setback unless of course you knew when to retreat and preserve your forces. Given the amount of time it would take to train and regroup all the units again to from such a stack in one turn, chances are a loss at Raphia means a loss of Jerusalem and a much more difficult time defeating Egypt. Also need to remember that the longer it takes to subdue egypt, the more you risk a 2 or 3 front war with the Ptolemies, Parthia, and Armenia. All in all, id just try and win it..shouldnt be too hard with superior elephants..i just run mine at the ptolemies elephants and if they go amok, then they rampage in egyptian lines not mine
