Default UNCONFIRMED: Jeff van Dyck is apparantly is in talks with The Creative Assembly

Unconfirmed rumour's from various sources state that Dick van Dyck is talking with The Creative Assembly about doing the music for the next Total War game, however there has been an announcement that The Creative Assembly are in talks with Markus "Notch" Persson (from the Minecraft Game) and are interested in using motion-capping for their next Total War Game, which has been announced that will be unveiled at the Indie and PC game expo "Rezzed" in Brighton, UK between the dates of 6th and 7th of July.

to my understanding, he has composed many of the total war games, so i dont think this really tells us much about what the next total war game is.

True, but it gives us a clue that perhaps they are fairly far along with the planning or even development.

I remember he did the music for Rome - unless I'm mistaken - didn't he do Empire and Napoleon as well? His soundtracks are class so to have him back onboard is a good thing.

Not necessarily - it could just as easily be Victorian, or WW1.

WWI would probably include America though, since America was a big part of it (near the end). And Victoria would most likely be a worldwide map

America did pretty much nothing in comparison with Britain, France and Belgium

WWI is a small period of time... but it was the first World War. Let that sink in. First. World. War. It's a perfect setting for a Total War game. I'm just a bit skeptical as to how CA can tackle something so immense. I'd much prefer them to work on making battles larger and more campaign map depth (especially a real-time campaign) if they want to head in this direction.

Even if they did WW1, imagine the battles. Sitting in trenches. Real fun. It would ruin the best part of the game (in my opinion). Unless they didn't make it trench warfare, which would then make it not WW1. I just don't see it as a good era to do

They would need a real-time campaign in order for it to work. Months, days and even hours need to count. Battles must also be integrated with the campaign map to an unseen extent.

Trench warfare is not boring.. it was decisive. Fighting in a stalemate is something never seen in Total War, which has always been about conducting a pseudo blitzkrieg even with ancient armies. Reconnaissance and arms races would be essential, something never implemented in TW games. Offensives would be a downright slaughter. Definitely not boring. And besides, the bulk of trench stalemate warfare was conducted on the Western front. Are you forgetting there were other fronts in the... World War?

And all those things are not Total War (as in those features would completely change Total War, and wouldn't even be part of the series IMO)

CA just needs to return to their best game IMO (Rome!) and improve it.

I just don't see how it would work as a TW game. Even by WW1, we were beginning to move away from large scale units - they certainly didn't stand in rows opposite each other blasting away with rifles, did they?

To go beyond Napoleonic times,CA would have to come up with a completely new type of game - it probably wouldn't even feel like TW any more.
