They have more armour and it has to remain balanced.

If you want realistic stats, this submod is recommended: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=518028

Militia are the semi-trained citizens and peasants called up to fight (unless you are Rome). Hence, their defence skills are very low. If anything the Gobbo should have a higher for merely surviving in his cutthroat society.

I have played Gondor quite a lot with both Vanilla stats and MOS (RR/RC) stats and their militia is far from worthless. In fact it is just fine for doing what it is supposed to; holding the enemy in place till your OP BGs can charge and rout them. If you want to see worthless militia, try FPoE.

If you do not mind me saying so, I suspect that your problem stems from using Gondor's army wrongly. Use your BGs for fighting, not administration; theu roll over any opposition except Nazgūl and Ologs, which takes a bit longer. Should you search the forum, or just peruse a few pages, you will see that there are many who think that mounted BG are OP and unbalances the game towards Gondor.

i have to agree with Aldor, I much prefer RC stats, Though be aware some units have relatively low defense skill scores there as well, many things go into defense skill, weapon type, shield type, armor type, race and unit quality all play a part. For instance the large pavise shield lowers defense skill, but of course if you of get a great shield value.

Things like an oblique approach with Gondor's shield units can save on your casualties due to missile fire. It takes practice and I screw it up as often as I get right but when it works it works well. I always try to make sure my left engages enemies right first. it seems to work better for me, though I guess it could be wishful thinking on may part

Side note: mounted bodyguards are INCREDIBLY OP. They should be abolished as they rule out all other tactics as the optimal strategy.

    Concerning Gondorian infantry:

Most of them are indeed militia. But they have professional (and elite) troops aswell.

It makes sense that units with more armour have less defence skill as it has much to do with agility. And their total defence is better than all orc units, very good for a middle game unit (only elite units of other men faction can compare), so I would hardly call them worthless. Armour is better than defence skill anyway as it protects you from ranged and melee attacks, defence skill only in melee battle.
