computer freezing constantly

Well I built my computer last year, and for a while it worked fine, but after about 2 months it started to freeze for minutes at a time then will start to work again. It happens on anything bit especially on Firefox, and any windows explorer folder, it has gotten to the point of being stuck for 10 minutes, and all sounds or things I tell it to do during the time of being frozen gos through. I'm basically at wits end with the machine.

When was the last time you cleaned the computer of all the dirt and dustbunnies?
When was the last time you run disk cleanup and did a deep, optimized defrag?
How much free disc space?

also every month and right now about 40 gigs but its been doing this even with there being 200 gigs of space.

Alright now that I can elaborate, I was on my phone. My computer will freeze, everything will stop responding and won't respond for a good 5-10 minutes, in which it won't play any sounds, nor will it respond to my typing until after the time of the freeze. Now it won't start freezing until about 5 minutes after my computer is first turned on, during those 5 minutes it responds like normal. It has certain games it dislikes and just will not stop freezing on, aswell as others in which it kinda likes and only freezes sometimes. I don't think it is a ram issue, I'm leaning more towards hard drive but any advice would be appreciated.

Check temps and voltages.

With summer coming to the northern hemisphere and already here where I live, it could some effect.

Have you tried updating your motherboard drivers including the BIOS?

Yea, I've done both of those to no end haha, thats part of the reason I'm so confused, I really can't find anything wrong.

I've tried but i can't find any updates for my motherboard. by the way if theres anything you want to see that you think would help diagnose this, I will be more than willing to try it, and share the results.

Are you always connected to the Internet? If so try unplugging/un-connecting your system from the router or modem and see if you still have the same problems. If so then I'm barking up the wrong tree. Good luck!

Done a deep antivirus/malware scan, yet? This would be my next thought.

I don't know why but may want to do a rootkit scan, too.

No, I'm not always connected to the internet, but I usually am, Thank you, I'll try it anyway.

Yea, I've done multiple different virus scanners, none found anything.

I'll try that actually maybe something will pop up.

I did two rootkit scans, nothing found. Any other thoughts?

You mentioned the harddrive in the OP. Have you run chkdsk?

Just a thought. Keep the [Processes] tab on the Task Manager open at all times and try to replicate the problem. If it occurs again then see if anything is using abnormally large amounts of CPU time.

Actually, funny that you mention that, my processes shows that my CPU usage will jump from 5% to 50% or sometimes 80% for no reason, there is nothing using the CPU... strange, does it mean anything?

When it does that, what process jumps to the top of the processes list? Could be a clue we need.

These are the top two of your processes.

I use windows Live for nothing even though Windows Update likes trying ti install it.

Wait... I do have bulletstorm which I believe uses windows live.

Steam has been known to do the same with players on one game while polling multiplayer for another game.

Ah, I do have steam running almost constantly, but some times steam fails to open on start up... this whole build has been just plain strange.
