    Top News

The Scriptorium will be holding its summer writing competition the same time as last year, with the submissions period beginning on August 1st and lasting for the entire month. We are still working out the finer details for this competition, though likely it will be much like last summer's competition. But nothing is set yet!

    Other News

Nothing else to report here this time around. We are currently staffed quite well and are not seeking any new librarians for the time being, though we may once the writing competition rolls around. If interested though, you may still apply to the librarians usergroup (via your control panel, this is NOT the social group) so your application can be looked at when a position is available.

    Article Reviews

Our reviews for the month, as always. I think this time we offer some stellar article reviews here, both the reviewers of course and the articles being reviewed, are all interesting and should be of some keen interest to many readers.

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood (Singleplayer) by Inarus - Review by Mhaedros

    Author: Inarus
Original thread: Assassin's Creed Brotherhood (Singleplayer)
Scriptorium thread: Assassin's Creed Brotherhood (Singleplayer)

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood (Singleplayer) For all those people with a secret maniac hidden inside, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood seems like the perfect game. This time Ezio is in Rome and he is not alone. A lot of features have been added since the second version of the game and here is the place to read about them,

Inarus' review is well written and contains a lot of information about the game. He not only focuses on the new parts, but also compares them to Assassin's Creed 2. The only complaint I have is the estimation: in my opinion he is being a bit too kind, but that might just be me. All in all, this is a review that should definitely be read by everyone who wants to know more about the series, or just likes games in general.

    The Istari by:David93 Review by:SonofPeverel

    Author: David93
    Article: The Istari
    Scriptorium Link: The Istari

    The Istari by: David93
From the commissioning of the Istari (Wizards) by the Valar (Angelic Beings) to help the realm of Middle Earth win the battle against Sauron, to the epic return of Gandalf the White and victory against evil, The Istari tells J. R. R. Tolken’s story in outstanding poetic form. David93 captures, in each verse of the poem, the unique qualities of each of the five wizards, who set out to defeat Sauron. The Istari will in the least stimulate the casual poetry reader and satisfy the diehard lore lover.

Mago Barca by HannibalB. Review by: Påsan

    Author: HannibalB
    Article: Mago Barca
    Scriptorium Link: [History] Mago Barca

Mago Barca Mago Barca was the youngest brother of the iconic general Hannibal Barca. In this article by 'HannibalB' his life as a general under his brother in the Second Punic war is described in great detail of what we know of his exploits in leading the Cartiginian forces against the Roman Republic in Hispania, Gallia and Italy.

What is interesting about this article is that it is focused on the role of one of the lesser known characters of the Second Punic war. The focus on his brother Hannibal tends to overshadow the roles played by both Mago and his brother Hasdrubal who was pivotal in many of Hannibal's triumphs and defeats.

The article is well written, researched and structured and does a great job in describing Magos role in the war and the battles in which he participated. I experienced that reading about the war from a slightly different perspective gives readers better understanding of the Second Punic war and the of the Carthaginians. It is absolutely worth a read for people that likes ancient history or military history. I would also recommend reading HannibalB's equally excellent article on Hasdrubal for his role in the war and the shorter article on Hannibal.

IWTE Tool and Tutorials - Review by StealthFox

IWTE Tool and Tutorials Medieval II: Total War and its expansion, Kingdoms, released in 2006 and 2007 respectively, continues to thrive and remains one of the most popular editions of the Total War series. The M2TW modding community is perhaps the strongest and most vibrant with such greats as Stainless Steel, Broken Crescent, and Third Age Total War. One reason why the modding community continues to flourish is due to the ingenuity and talent of our members here at the Total War Center. One tool that will sustain the community and allow continued growth is the groundbreaking IWTE tool developed by wilddog with support from makanyane and King Kong.

The IWTE tool allows for the creation of custom settlements and custom terrains, which we all know is something that many thought impossible not too long ago. With custom settlements modders can create an atmosphere and level of immersion that was never possible with the vanilla M2TW settlements. But, you might say "this is surely above my abilities. How will I ever get into this?" There are several great tutorials to get you started creating your own settlements. Two excellent tutorials have been created by makanyane and King Kong. Both are easy to follow with clearly defined steps as well as screenshots to help guide you along the way. There is also a world terrain file tutorial available created by wilddog. So, now you've got the tool and tutorials go out and make something great!
