Default Fighting an army on a hill

Hills are a great tactical thing. It makes you almost as powerful as god, so long as you don't screw it up.

But sometimes my enemies are on hills, and that makes it hard. In real life, you're supposed to draw at least part of their army off a hill so you can remove the advantage, but I can't figure out how. Against a defending AI, this actually wont work at all since they never come down from a hill*.

So, given our low tech approach, how do we fight men on a hill? If my archers get in range so are theirs, men moving up the slopes get exhausted and if I try to flank, they will wheel part of their (fresh, on a hill) forces against my less than fresh, coming up a hill forces.

    Help!

    *That I've seen.

Try to attack from more than one side of the hill. Allways choose the sides with mildes slope to attack even if it means your forces will have to walk longer and get much more tired.

Yes multiple attack directions is a good hing and having a bigger army won't hurt either. You might be able to draw their missle/skirmisher away a little with cavalry getting their attention open fire though most certainly they move back to formation and don't follow the cav as you withdraw it.

Like demagogos nicator said don't go the direct path if that means it goes up more straight. if possible go around and let your men rest some time (out of range from missiles of course) then go on, march in stages.

Above all be patient. You are the attacker, so the one thing you control is when the battle starts. Use that to your advantage. Place your flanking troops out of missle range while your main force sits just outside of missle range. Have everything set up exactly the way you want it before you commence the attack.

But if the defender comes out of his position... then make him pay. Try to isolate whatever units he detaches from his main force and anhilate them. Control the pace of the combat and use the clock... you have plenty of time.
