Having trouble installing with steam

First off, i followed all the instructions down to a t in http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=479145 <--- this thread, so i'm probably not doing anything wrong on that end. what happens is, i'll load up the game, no problem. i click on "play campaign," everything happens as it should. once i try to actually start the campaign, the game crashes. can anyone offer any suggestions? i tried installing patch 2a, but i may have extracted that to the wrong place, since it wouldn't even load the game afterward.

more information: after installing patch 2a, upon startup, an error pops up that says "unable to find skeleton: fs_slinger_belt_bag"

I have no idea about the first one, but every time that there is a missing skeleton or animation thing, you didn't install it right, so after you get the first right somehow, completely redo the patch.

Did you also get this error when first trying to play RTRVII? If so, the main install was either corrupted or installed incorrectly. If it did work, you did something wrong when installing the patch. Are you sure that you installed it in the folder where your main VII install is also located?

hey guys, this may be the wrong thread. but i installed rtr platinum 1.9 and it worked perfectly. when i start the campaign, anything in the bottom toolbar, like end turn or select units in town, doesn't respond. hotkeys also have a minor problem. i am so confused. selecting units on the map works fine, but the bottom toolbar doesn't work. HELP!
