My GOD is the Jay-Z track not fitting at all. Honestly what is with people putting him in every trailer nowadays?

But yea, looks alright, Leo is usually pretty good and this seems perfect for Baz Luhrmann to direct (Mulan Rouge, Romeo X Juliet) need to have more than the initial trailer before I can get too into it looking good or not. But something about the way Leo is portraying Gatsby, and this is just the trailer so I could be very wrong, seems off putting. He seems to lack the confidence that Gatsby should have, but again, trailer, and trailers lie.

Edit: Also wanted to add that I HATE Luhrmanns aesthetic for this, typical flashing lights and wonky camera work, looks like it was shot by someone with ADD on Coke.

I think it looks ing awful, the music for it is completely retarded and the director is a hack. Also for some damn reason it will be in 3D, it is really disappointing and I don't have any high hopes at all that this will be as good as the book.

If the music in the movie is like that instead of using music from the 1920's, or at least themed like the 20's...

Hah was thinking the same thing... It's loud and flashy but it's not glamorous at all from the looks of it.

Grrr, yes the ADD trailer gets on my nerves. Aside from that, it looks like the director has done a good job of submersing the production in all the glitzy, decadent shallowness that the author was critical of, in a somewhat clumsy attempt at imitating him. I'm guessing it's going to be way too "in your face" with certain parts of the subject matter and leave little space for the spectator's interpretation. Still, I'll wait until getting more than two minutes of material before going further.

Luhrmann was hardly going to depart from his Romeo and Juliet model and it may look like TGG will be like the party scene extended to two hours, but I'm hoping that's just the trailer.

The detached, untrustworthy nature of Nick's narration is also hard to translate to screen so it would seem they are focused on the decadence, the opulence and the parties. Whether the film can have the same feeling of distaste and critical distance from these things is unlikely and it would be a shame if it does become overly focused on the glamour, especially as our modern society often mimics the excesses of the 20s, even if we are firmly heading towards 30s territory now. I'd argue that the greatness of the book is not the fairly simple plot, but the atmosphere and the tone, the biting social commentary. From the trailer, Luhrmann has his parties down pat, but I'm not sure if he'll be able to translate the facets of Nick Carraway's narration into an essential third person film.

Anyway, in Leo Di Caprio I trust. And after Titanic, appearing out of the waves in Inception and about to end this film floating dead on a pool, the conspiracy continues. Shall certainly be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Honestly, I think it looks like a sort of Michael Bay movie for chicks. Instead of explosions and robots, this has got melodrama, plenty of pizazz, of course a lot of "cute" dresses, a girl meeting a mysterious rich guy... You get it.

I'm pretty sure it is at my school too, only for 12th graders (I'm in 11th).

WEll the trailers usually are made by a 3rd party ad agency. So the Music in them is almost NEVER chosen by the director or studio. So im not going to fault the movie for that. I just found the trailer to be offputting is all.

And well yea, its a period peice made by the guy who did Moulin Rouge and Romeo X Juliet. Baz Luhrmann is FAMOUS for that bombastic highly saturated fast and colorful style. It could work but I can also see how it implodes and makes an utter peice of . So hopefully he can get it right but, im not holding my breath.

Ridiculous. DiCaprio has been shoehorned into some very awkward roles lately, especially after the disaster that was J. Edgar. DiCaprio simply isn't that silent, mysteriously charismatic type that Gatsby is. DiCaprio just looks like he's trying way too hard sometimes to be really manly in the role and is probably not the right kind of good looking or inner conflict.

Honestly, a more fitting pick for that kind of assertive charisma, inner anguished loner would be Ryan Gosling (who has a lot of untapped dramatic talent) or Christian Bale. Even Jon Hamm.

Another stupid take on a brilliant book. The only version I've liked was the old one with Sam Waterston as Nick and it could have been better.

No wonder Fitz drank... and I get the feeling that I'm going to need some strong drink to sit through it.

I agree. Gosling or Bale would be good. Or heck, maybe they could consider building a cast without tapping the few hundred big names...

I guarantee that movie will completely misunderstand the book and fail to translate it to the screen.

Ryan Gosling would have been perfect for Gatsby, I like Bale but, I think he might be too imposing for the role. I said it before, but Dicaprio just doesn't look like Gatsby SHOULD look. But this was never about who was best fit to play the roles. The casting was made because they fit the aesthetic that Baz Luhrmann always has to build, and his style just doesn't work with The Great Gatsby. The 74' version, while not great by any means, at least got the FEEL right.

Its going to be another Moulin Rouge, just with a better plot because you can just rip most of it from the book. (My confidence for this decreases the more I think about it)

Yeah, Gosling directed by Paul Thomas Andersen, Martin Scorsese, or David Fincher even.

    That would be optimal.
