Well, why must they? I'm on the planning team for Grade 12 farewell this year and for a song to play on the speakers while the parents are being seated, I suggested Chopin's Nocturne No. 2 (excellent piano piece). Not a single soul except me voted for it. We ended up doing "Princes of the Universe" by Queen, something everyone had heard, everyone knows, something tired and old. So, why can't anyone try anything new? And afterwards, the jackass who had suggested Queen's music came up to me and said "You should know better than to suggest retard music for farewell". I'm still wondering in awe, why do people hate classical music these days?

Because they have not been exposed to it at all, or very little. It is sad really. There are many good Classical pieces (I refuse to call them songs) out there.

Well they're not songs, it's just the teacher organizing this called for songs to play. And songs are kinda synonymous with music pieces these days. Really, a classical symphony, or nocturne, or concerto isn't a song. Except for Beethoven's 9th in D minor, the Ode to Joy does have various vocal parts.

Because music and people's tastes in music change.

I listen to classical music, it is next to death metal on my playlist and Johnny Cash is next to death metal, and round and round it goes.

Maybe it just dosen't seem radical enough for the youth of today.

But I'm like brokenfingers. On my playlists you have military marches that are next to speed metal that is next to classic rock that is next to a national anthem that is next to another classical piece...

EDIT: And all of that revolves around AC/DC. Just so you know.

I hated classical music when I was younger for the simple fact of having to listen to music I didn't like at all and then writing about it.

I sympathise with you, one time we were doing this movie presentation about Normandy (It was really cool because I was able to put scenes from Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers in to it) and when we got to the casualty part I suggested putting in Vaughn Williams: Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, and my group voted and put some **** piece of pop music.

Why must people hate classical music? Because todays society is made up by culturless youth with no taste for art or any sort of cultured enviroment. I mean christ this is the same culture that insist on ruining everything that was once good through horrible remakes or a storm of popularity thats over in a month. We have no culture today. Like I have friends who actulay would rather watch Freddy vs Jason than the Graduate and thought M*A*S*H wasn't funny. Today peopel don't watch movies for the movie only for blood and guts and cool graphics. Its sickening actualy.

Hey, we're not cultureless! The culture is different, yes, but its not like its gone. The thing about classical music is A). There's no rebellion in it. Cmon, when you are a teenager you want to offend people. Classical music simply fails to do that. B). It's old, and has been beaten into our heads. C). We can't relate to it... mainly because mostly there's no lyrics, but also because, hey, I'm an angsty suburban teenager. I need my music that I can feel, and be depressed with.

I just have to say, some blond punk with a nose ring, wearing ripped jeans, mashing an electric guitar and screaming for no apparent reason does not count as culture.

Its not about the style, its about the music. And many of today's rock bands aren't the stereotypical idiots singing about sex and drugs (should not be listening to Buck Cherry while saying this ). Its deep, and it sounds good. Classical music has no depth. There is music, at varying levels of difficulty. You hear it, thats it. You can be impressed by it, yes, but its not something you can keep coming back to because it doesn't really have as much meaning as today's music. It may to you, but to today's teenagers it does not.

I suppose it could be worse. One could be wearing :

    -curly wigs
    -foppish frocks
    -delicate fineries
    -silken stockings
    -clog shoes
    -and pince-nez

at the same time twirling in the ballroom and drinking in teacups in between.

Then maybe they should be attacking hair metal instead?

    The world mainly is.
It has lost the inner soul that was the grandeur of the Faustian culture, degenrating it into a pop civilisation.
(or maybe I'm reading too much of Oswald Spengler atm...)

All three points showing you know nothing of what you're talking about.

Oooh... Easy refutation for every single point, just backing up Sidus.

    A) You listen music primarily to enjoy it, but you can really rebel with classical music. Rebel against what? The current obnoxious trends that them giant music corporations are forcing youth towards. The ideas that youth are stupid, irresponsible, etc..

    B) There is a whole realm of classical music that most people have never listened to, each piece totally unique from the ones that are "beaten into our heads". Its age is very irrelevant because you will find so many pieces of classical music that are new to you. Each composer is so innovative with his work.

    C) This absence of lyrics is what makes classical music universal. You don't need the guy who's singing about his girlfriend leaving or his friend dying or people ignoring him because that message can be carried in any sort of depressed mood. What's more, it doesn't have to be terribly corny to have a funeral march or some other despair in classical music. Composers poured their emotions into their work, and the interpretation is far more open for you. Ask Siblesz about Tchaikovsky... What an emo

I don't hate classical music, I don't love it either. It's just something I can stand in movies like LOTR, or Gladiator, because it's not 'out of place' there. It's just not something I'd put in my playlist, or on my iPod.

I think I'm the same- I'd far rather have a classic piece for an ambient purpose- such as in films or games, than just to listen to. I'm not entirely sure why though. It's just not common for my age/ generation to listen to it on a regular basis I think. If I was brought up on it I'd probably think otherwise.

What reason is there to support the assertion that one culture is superior to another?

Because it sucks???? All kidding aside. People just don't find it interesting, I know I don't. Every time I hear classical music I get bored or tired.

Classical music is just, on the whole, boring and very similar. I can rarely tell one song apart from another, except some good ones like Ride of the Valkyries.
