Default Serbian nationalist Tomislav Nikolic won Serbian presidential election

Would he be our best hope to stop formation of Greater Albania?

Nationalist Tomislav Nikolic has been elected president of Serbia, with liberal incumbent Boris Tadic admitting defeat soon after polls closed.

Mr Nikolic has 50.21% of the vote, against 46.77% for Mr Tadic, with 40% of votes counted.

The contest had been seen as a vote on EU membership and the newly-elected president promised that "Serbia will not stray from its European path".

Mr Tadic appealed to keep "Serbia's strategic orientation towards the EU".

"It would be a tragic mistake if Serbia changes its orientation. It is a matter of peace and economic development," he said.

Speaking of Tomislav Nikolic, he added: "I congratulate him on the victory, it was a fair and well-earned victory and I wish him luck."

As he confirmed his commitment to Europe, Mr Nikolic claimed "This is a turning point for Serbia... these elections were not about who will take Serbia to the EU, but who will solve the economic problems created by the Democratic Party (of Boris Tadic)".

Although a former ally of Slobodan Milosevic, it is known that Tomislav Nikolic has change his stance recently to more central right direction and becomes a pro-EU politician in Serbia. Overall, it is interesting to see what his foreign policy would be, but it is expecting he would stick what current Serbian government follows. What more serious problem in Serbia now is very high unemployed rate (24%), and it is yet to see what new economic policy he would deploy to solve the bad condition of Serbia economy.

I'm surprised. Serbian support for EU membership has been consistently strong for a decade. But I guess considering the financial turmoil that the Greek sovereign debt crisis has caused, it's a no-brainer in the end. Although technically EU membership doesn't equate to Euro membership.

I suppose he could start by sending a bill to Nato for all the damage they caused and the loss of a Serbian region?

Erm...I'd think they'd have a few bills of their own if they were to play that game.

So wait, Serbians had a choice between a centre-right party and a centre-right nationalist party?

    good job tomislav

Nothing surprising here, Tadic and his politics were widely hated in Serbia for a long time.

First of all,he cannot deploy any economic policy, since that is the job of the government.Serbia is a parliamentary republic,so the president really has little power to none.

Second, the title of the BBC article is misleading.Nikolic is no nationalist, not anymore. If you compare his program with the one of Tadic, they're basically the same.Tadic only lost because people punished him for the catastrophic situation in the country.Nikolic will not bring anything new.And if the government is not formed by his party(very likely) he will have his hands tied.

Nikolic claimed that getting in the EU is his aim as well, so I see no issue here.

"Steps to be taken in case Russia should be forced out of war considered. Various movements [of ] troops to and from different fronts necessary to meeting possible contingencies discussed. Conference also weighed political, economic, and moral effect both upon Central and Allied powers under most unfavorable aspect from Allied point of view. General conclusions reached were necessity for adoption of purely defensive attitude on all secondary fronts and withdrawing surplus troops for duty on western front. By thus strengthening western front [those attending] believed Allies could hold until American forces arrive in numbers sufficient to gain ascendancy."

Like I said his program is a copy/paste of Tadic's one.The only difference is that Nikolic was able to say "Tadic brought disaster to Serbia,he needs to go away". While Tadic applied the classic tactic of spreading fear of the "return to the '90s " if Nikolic wins the elections.
So basically this vote was more against Tadic, rather than pro Nikolic.

So, your opinion is that nothing changed at all?

Well besides the fact that Tadic will not rule for 13 years in a role(he was in power fo 8 years in a role, and this mandate was going to give him 5 more years),no,nothing will change. For many reasons(the president has no real power, for example).

The more important battleground is the parliament. But even if Nikolic's party manages to form the government ,i fail to see how anything will change if they all have the same program.

Well, I'm unfamiliar with Serbian politics but I really do hope that Serbia enters the EU.

Thanks for your friendly wishes which i know are honest, but i really hope Serbia stays out of the EU as long as possible.I don't want us to be yet another second or third class state in the EU.Not to mention the unresolved Kosovo issue, with most EU members violating our territorial integrity and sovreignty.

The OP mentions he's a nationalist. In what way? He can't be THAT nationalist if he's pro-EU.
