Default Who plays with "AI must manage settlements with no governor?"

I'm curious if anyone uses that setting.

I tried it. I always had my generals running around among the various cities I had, arriving at cities at the end of their queue, refilling them, then heading off to the next. My castles would always randomly recruit units peasants that I would disband. I pretty much broke all of the time, thanks to combined AI management of recruitment and the like and the fact that when I did have control over my settlements with a governor, I would fill up their queues to deprive the AI of its automismanagement opportunities.

Overall, I didn't enjoy it so much. I can see that it would add a layer of challenge.

    Anyone prefer using that setting?

I have tried it before, but thought that it was too tedious to have my precious generals running around from city to city throughout the entire campaign. Also, the AI makes very bad decisions, if any, about which buildings are built and what/when to recruit.

never did it; well ... only once when I started playing RTW (back in 2007) and then it was the first time I realised the AI is retarded
when I started playing M2TW I knew it is the same so I never tried it

Only did it once, back in RTW, when I got into this series last year. I was so frustrated with it because I practically had to use captains in all of my minor campaigns, only using a general/governor in the case of a major one. You can imagine my joy when I discovered the problem could simply be turned off...

Even if you choose this setting, can't you just cancel the AI recruitments and constructions in the settlement panel?

Sure. When there's no general there, I set the thingy to Growth build which makes the happiness percentage jump and then unclick the Construction and Recruitment boxes. That way they won't build or recruit anything until you go and tell them to. I've occasionally left Construction checked at harmless little places (Dublin, for example, or Helsinki) if I want them to grow without having to visit them. I always look carefully at the "Construction report" at the end of each turn and can see if they're doing anything goofy. If so, I'll go and turn off Construction.

nope, you'll find they're greyed out.

I sometimes do it for the hack of it, only playing with the building queues and the units the AI provides me with (even flagging auto-manage back on when there's a general in town). Usually ends in heroic disaster!

Playing this way is like shooting yourself to the hand. AI sucks.

I view it as pointless, since we control a faction why on earth wouldn't we be able to control the mayor of a town/city?
