    Default Religion?

    Hey, lads (and ladies?).

New poster here, really excited about Arthurian... I'm a 5th Century re-enactor myself, and look forward to driving those Saxon bastards back into the Mare Germanium :original:

Just one question, and I apologise if I've missed it somewhere in the background information. Is any account being made in the mod regarding religion? (I.E. Germanic Pagan versus Celtic Pagan versus Roman Christian versus Pelagian Heresy)

I'd be interested to see how those concepts interacted. I think it would add a new depth to the era... rather than just the old "Christian Good/Pagan Bad" that is so often advanced in the retrospective analysis (Bede, Gildas, etc.)

    Thanks!

Right now (in the closed beta version) it's just Christian/Pagan. There is a third religion slot available that could be used, but I'm not sure what Agraes plans are for this (if any).

Anything added beyond the first three religions has no effect on the game (no unrest etc.) and therefore is a waste of time in my opinion.

    Cool.

Perhaps you would consider adding the Pelagian Heresy, if you wanted to make use of the third religion... it was VERY popular amongst christian Britons, and was a strong political touch-point between the post-roman ascendant tribes. So much so that St. Germanus was deployed to Verulamium in 430 to quash it. There were very definite continental/Britannic rifts between Pelagians and Roman Christians... so there would be plenty of opportunity to evenly split Christianity.

The way I see it, make the Bretons and Armorican Franks Catholic, along with the Dumnonians (and maybe Ui Neill, depending on how quickly you reckon the Irish adapted to the teachings of Phadraig). Then make the balance of the Briton tribes Pelagian, and everyone else Pagan.

That's the way I see it. Not trying to tell you how to make your mod, just an idea I had to give it some flavour.

Hi Lupus, it was once planned to go with the following religions:
    - Celtic Christianism
    - Roman Christianism
    - Heresy
    - Germanic Paganism
    - Pictish Paganism
    - British Paganism
    - Gaelic Paganism

But like Stuie is pointing out, only three religions can cause unrests. We didn't attack the whole traits system too yet, and it requires some extra work. So I guess for the first release we will go for Christianism/Paganism. Pelagian heresy exist by a trait ingame.

BTW, in 481 AD, most of Britain and Ireland were already christian, except Anglo-Saxons, Northern Picts and Fenna Gaels

    Thanks, Agraes.

I knew that Britons were Christians, but I wasn't sure about how fast it grew in Ireland after Phadraig. Thanks for the info.

South was entirely christian, Ulaidh was also christianised by Patrick, the only area with still an important minority of pagans was Connaght, and particulary Fenneacht, who were still majorly pagans. The Fenna were believed to be the most ancient tribe of Ireland

    Good to know. Thanks, Agraes.

Just out of curiosity, have the traits been issued values yet? I love to know what the effect of the "Pelagian Heretic" trait would be.

I think splitting general Celtic and Germanic paganism might do best; they were fairly incompatible, with entirely seperate concepts of priesthoods and different mystic and quasi-mystic practices, and disparate views over the purpose of people. Incidentally, I should hope the pagan temples in game would be changed; 'Morrigan' was not a key Irish deity. She was actually vaguely reviled except by her own cult. The Fene and other pagan Irish mostly worshipped the sun god Lugh (the key personality of Irish religion and one of the most important gods in older Celtic religions). Morrigan was offered personal worship but otherwise disliked (she was a goddess of fertility, nominally, but so were half a dozen other deities; however, she was the only deity of senseless violence and murder, and as such, not very popular; Christian missions in Ireland were quite explicit that most Irish were part of a sun cult, that of Lugh).
