No Papal Elections

I just started playing Medieval 2 again and a problem appeared. I assassinated the pope, but instead of using the papal assassination movie with the pope getting shot in the head, it was one of the other movies for generals that get assassinated. Then the game doesn't even acknowledge the pope's death, and next turn the Papal Elections don't happen and instead it gives me a message saying that a new pope was elected. Why are the Papal Elections not occurring?

You don't get to vote if you don't have any cardinals.

Vanilla and Holy Roman Empire. But I don't have any Cardinals. Still doesn't explain the lack of announcement the Pope is dead and the unusual assassination movie.

Thats not true, you have special assasination movies for the pope and everything ...

I haven't played vanilla in years and when I did, I just overrran Rome and did not worry about assassintaing him. No longer excommunicated with the new Pope next turn, anyway.
