Default two questions regarding diplomacy and building effects

    1. Is there a way for me to know what my relationship is with the different factions i.e at war, trade agreements, marriage etc without having my diplomat initiate contact?
    2. I think this may be a really silly question but...if i build a building in one settlement will the effects of that building effect all my subsequent recruited units throughout my faction. E.g., if i build the tanner building in London, will the leather armor upgrade that it provides be also applicable to units built in York? Or only units built in the settlement(s) that have tanners, in this case London.

    1) go into the diplomacy tab in the faction overview. hover over the faction's symbol, and your status with them will pop up.

    2) nope, its only applicable to that settlement. what you can do is bring units who have been trained without a leather tanner to a settlement with one, and retrain them there. this only works offocurs is the settlement can train those units (so it wont work for castle units in a city leather tanner)

There may have been some confusion because if a unit is not at full strength, it can only be retrained at a city/castle that is able to replenish it. But yeah, a full strength unit can be retrained anywhere the blacksmith is a high enough level.
