Default Malaysian ‘tribunal’ finds Bush, Blair guilty of war crimes

Malaysian ‘tribunal’ finds Bush, Blair guilty of war crimes

A symbolic tribunal in Malaysia ruled unanimously Tuesday that former U.S. President George W. Bush and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair were both guilty of “crimes against peace” for the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

The Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Tribunal, part of an initiative by former Malaysian premier Mahathir Mohamad – a fierce critic of the Iraq war – found the former leaders guilty after a four-day hearing.

While the court is modeled after the post-World War II Nuremberg Tribunal, it carries no legal weight.

“War criminals have to be dealt with — convict Bush and Blair as charged,” a statement from Mahathir’s Perdana Global Peace Foundation said. “A guilty verdict will serve as a notice to the world that war criminals may run but can never ultimately hide from truth and justice.”

Mahathir, who stepped down in 2003 after 22 years in power, unveiled plans for the tribunal in 2007 just before he condemned Bush and Blair as “child killers” and “war criminals” at the launch of an annual anti-war conference.

A seven-member panel chaired by former Malaysian Federal Court judge Abdul Kadir Sulaiman presided over the trial, which began last Saturday, and both Bush and Blair were tried in absentia.

“The evidence showed that the drums of wars were being beaten long before the invasion. The accused in their own memoirs have admitted their own intention to invade Iraq regardless of international law,” it said.

Next week, the Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Tribunal is expected to consider torture charges against former U.S.Vice President Dick Cheney, former U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
This tribunal has no legal value but just like Tokyo Tribunal on Afghanistan, the purpose of this tribunal was the moral accountability and impeachment of Ex-American and British heads of Government. Whenever in future these war criminals are brought before international forums for justice (which is very unlikely given the fact that those forums have been persecuting regimes which were opposing these war criminals' respective nations), finding of these two tribunals will help in establishing guilt of the two war criminals and their dirty accomplices. Discuss.
"I have always held the religion of Muhammad in high estimation because of its wonderful vitality. It is the only religion which appears to me to possess that assimilating capacity to the changing phase of existence which can make itself appeal to every age. I have studied him - the wonderful man and in my opinion far from being an anti-Christ, he must be called the Saviour of Humanity. I believe that if a man like him were to assume the dictatorship of the modern world, he would succeed in solving its problems in a way that would bring it the much needed peace and happiness: I have prophesied about the faith of Muhammad that it would be acceptable to the Europe of tomorrow as it is beginning to be acceptable to the Europe of today." Good for Marathir. Perhaps we should look into his reign next.

You'll have to hurry, he's eighty six.

Also, he's completely irrelevant now, and watching his legacy crumble, accelerated by his own actions in office.

Nothing to discuss. Just more scapegoating using the big names involved, ironic considering the Marathir wasen't exactly a great leader himself. What evidence was used? What objectivity does the court have? What the blimy hell is the point of this?

Without makeup is the only real test and without it both are "eh" so the tribunal is null and void.

Poet I think you are suffering from a sad disconnect from reality. Whether you want to admit it or not there is a difference, when comes to international law and the rules of war between INTENTIONAL MASSACRE and INTENTIONAL SYSTEMATIC TARGETING of civilian populations, versus civilian deaths due to proximity to military targets. Since you appear to be in such a delicate emotional state, I will try to stay away from the words 'collateral damage' as callous as they are. But the fact remains, targeting infrastructure and military targets with smart weapons does not equal indiscriminate carpet bombing of civilian sectors. Is war horrible? Yes. Do I feel good when I see pictures of dead Iraqi children and families? Of course not, I want to vomit. But such is the nature of war. That war was fought with the best technology available to minimize civilian loss of life. Please stop comparing it to past campaigns of extermination.

Really? How naive of me. Dear brother I wish such a war for every American then.

Roland Huguenin-Benjamin, a spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Iraq, described what happened in Hilla and neighboring villages as “a horror.” His team saw “several dozens of bodies which were completely blown to pieces” and “dozens of severed bodies and scattered limbs.” Huguenin-Benjamin confirmed there were at least 460 wounded, being treated in an ill-equipped 280-bed hospital that was “completely unable to cope.” All victims were “farmers, women and children.”

The true test is without hair. Without both hair and makeup is too much.

« Le courage est toujours quelque chose de saint, un jugement divin entre deux idées. Défendre notre cause de plus en plus vigoureusement est conforme à la nature humaine. Notre suprême raison d’être est donc de lutter ; on ne possède vraiment que ce qu’on acquiert en combattant. »Ernst Jünger

We've already got troops in Brunei, simply roll over the border and it's liberation time

Seems legit...I think I'll hold a tribunal later with some friends to discuss which is better...Pepsi or Coke.

In any case, how is this relevant at all? It did absolutely nothing other than waste four perfectly good days.

Amazing. A fake tribunal created specifically to find these guys guilty has found them guilty. Well done poet.

A court set up by the nations of earth, staffed by senior, independent, multiple-national judges that tries cases over the course of years where the defendant is provided an entire team of some of the most skilled lawyers of the human race is not really comprable to a three day tribunal by some bush haters.
