Default Roma Surrectum 2.0 Startup Issue

So, I used to be a huge fan of XGM and after a few years of playing other games and Shogun 2, I decided to give RS2 a try for RTW.

However, after installing appropriately the game refuses to start. It opens the game window, loads for a second and shows the title screen then bam, crashes to desktop with no error message. The only "check" I have in the launcher is High Res Unit Models. The rest is default.

I'm trying to start a Sparta Campaign using the RTW:BI exe. The normal RTW exe and the ALEX exe crash after opening, BI exe gets the farthest then crashes. My installation path is the standard C:/program files x86/ etc. installation. I'm not using Steam. I haven't modified any preferences.

Not entirely sure why it won't start. I'm rather eager to test this out and any help would be appreciated.

Well, first of: Donīt install any game in program files. Windows protects them, and falsely identifies mods as virus sometimes.

My advice: Reinstall RTW clean (wash your cds before, because a dirty cd can lead to corrupted game data), then install RS2.5 again.

Erm, sorry didn't see your message (forgot to refresh the thread). But as for this mod, it wasn't thrown in as a virus so all files should be there. I could always do another install I suppose.

Anyway, it's definitely not a CD related issue. I've got the installer of the game on my flash drive, as well as bi, 1.6 patch and alex just for convenience. I prefer using no-cd exe's not because of stolen games, but because I can't stand listening to a cd spin while gaming. It's just a peeve of mine.

Edit: Just noticed the button, so sorry for my double post.

Anyway, I found another thread where someone suggested a missing skeleton file could be from the .cab file being interrupted at some point when it was downloading. So, the only two files that it would be are RS22 or RS24. I think I'll give them each another DL, then reinstall the mod to see if it fixes it. I'll keep you posted.

Well, toyed with it. Did a fresh install.

Now I'm getting an error message about a missing skeleton. fs_s1_forest elephant rider or something. Lemme relaunch to find out what it is. " fs_s1_forest_elephant_javelinrider " So, why would this skeleton be missing from a fresh install? Or better yet, anyone have a link to where I can just download this skeleton?

    1. You need a clean and patched up version of RTW.
    2. Download all the RS2 files, as shown in the release thread.

    3. Now, install the RS2 mod to a new folder, created on the desktop. Mine is named Roma Surrectum 2.
    4. When the mod has been completly installed, copy and paste the entire contents of the Roma Surrectum 2 folder, located on your desktop, to your freshly installed RTW game. folder.

    5. The new launcher that has been created on the desktop doesn't work. This is because it is a shortcut that the installer has directed towards the Roma Surrectum 2 folder located on your desktop, which isn't a game folder. To fix this, right-click the shortcut and change the Target and Start In lines so that both point to your correct RTW folder.

So in my case, "C:\Users\Al Simmons\Desktop\Roma Surrectum 2\Roma Surrectum II.exe"

    becomes "D:\Activision\Rome - Total War\launcher\Roma Surrectum II.exe"

    etc.

    6. If you did everything correct, the launcher on the desktop works. If it doesn't delete it and create a new shortcut from the "Roma Surrectum II.exe" file located in Activision\Rome - Total War\launcher.

    Enjoy!

Kanzy, thanks for your detailed instructions. However, I did all of that prior to making this thread. I made sure I followed them correctly, because even the slightest mistake will ruin the mod and make it unplayable.

I got it working now though thanks to the torrent version of the download. Before I grabbed the torrent I used the FileFront links. The links are fine, but the files (not sure which CAB file) are missing some skeletons - I changed the fs_s1_forest_elephant_javelinrider to use another skeleton (fs_s1_fast_javelinman I believe) and the game said it was missing too.

Anyway, the torrented files are 100% clean and good to go. It started working the first time and I haven't encountered a single problem yet. I've actually just stopped playing a Sparta campaign as it's 6am and I need sleep. Again, thanks for your help.

I used the file front ones and got that error but the fix I listed worked for me, good to hear you got it working.

The reason we advise not installing into the Program Files directory is because Windows protects that folder from what IT considers to be unwarranted or malicious tampering. Unfortunately, that means that Windows can regard installing a modification to a game in that folder as 'tampering'. What Windows will then do is 'virtualize' some files...meaning, it will hold them in a sort of 'no man's land' under your Profile somewhere. For games and programs written with the expectation that Windows will do this, that's fine, but RTW was not designed that way, and the files Windows has moved will be seen by RTW as 'missing'. So you will get these weird errors.

Any version of Windows beyond and including WindowsXP Service Pack 3 will do this, so we HIGHLY advise, beg, plead with people NOT to install RTW in the 'Program Files' folder, in the 'Users' folder, on the 'Desktop' or in any folder that is part of your 'Profile' (My Documents or sub-folders thereof). These are all regarded as 'protected' folders.

The reason that people are having to 'install' RS2 into another folder than RTW (when it is in one of these 'protected' folders) is because the RS2 installer is being seen by Windows as 'tampering' with your RTW install, so it puts part of the files, many of them, or random parts of them, in your Profile somewhere, and then RS2 doesn't work because parts are not where they should be. When you just copy the whole contents of the RS2 install folder into RTW, that is a different 'action' that Windows doesn't see as malicious. So there is nothing wrong with the installer, it's just a matter of how Windows treats it.

Yeah, I know. I've used other mods for various games, but I always use the default location just because it has a mental click with me. I have it working as posted above, but by using the torrented version of the mod instead of the FileFront link.

But I do see what you're saying - a small hassle for a great mod. And I do mean that. This is a fantastic mod, full of fun. I decided to do a game with the Ptolemies since Egypt is great and all, and they are more of a Hellenic nation by history's records during this time. Anyway, they are simply phenomenal. Having a massive war with the Seleucid Empire - and I mean around 4 on 4 stacks 80% of the time! They're relentless. Also having a decent sized war with Macedon. It's hard to solo them with a city or two up there and the location being so far away from your main troop breeding cities, but being allied with Sparta is paying off big time.

But I do have a question actually. I was wondering why the units had such high Defense Skill.
