Terry Pratchett for the most part writes in a fictional world called the discworld. On the surface its fun basic humour but usually there is a satirical look at the real world underneath and some very very funny stories.

I started reading them when I was quite young, and I am still reading them now. He is quite possibly one of the greatest authors of the last couple of decades.

I am also enjoying Conn Igguldens Emporer series, the dramatisation of Julius Caesars life.

Moderatly enjoying the Wheel of Time series which is a fantasy star wars clone of sorts but without the lightsabers or technology. I say moderatly because the scale is epic and the story so involved and it would be one of the greatest fantasy stories ever written if it wasn't for the obscure writing style of Robert Jordan. His obsession with womens reactions and dresses are disturbing to say the least, and his reversal of stereotypical ideas as a concept for the story is crap and clumsy.

Can't stand Valerio Massimi Manfredi either.

I picked The Wheel of Time but in fact it ties with A Song of Ice and Fire by George Martin (http://www.amazon.co.uk:80/gp/produc...ance&n=266239). In Martin's series there is what lacks in most fantasy novels: suspense. You never know what will happen next and one of your favorite characters may die at the end of the chapter! Of course it makes the story often cruel, and I do not recommend this series to anyone who likes happy endings. Another reason I like Martin's writing style is that he concentrates on the plot and doesn't drown us into endless pages of useless description (unlike Tolkien or Robert Jordan).

I fully agree with you about the dresses and women's reactions. The apex being The World of Dream where the women mentally change their clothes every two seconds or so and Jordan feels compelled to share this sensational experience with the reader (as if we cared!). Although it's predictable that the main characters will go unscathed throughout the series and there's very likely no surprise ending, the storyline is excellent.

    Voted Lord of the Rings.

I'm not a Terry Pratchet kind of guy. I like the setting, the characters etc, but his writing style infuriates me. It's always jumping from character to character, and I found myself getting well. Confused.

Terry pratchet was funny as i was younger. MORT was my first book i read. I can tell of three very good series. I. Malazan book of fallen from Steven Erikson. - Great books, but very detailed. II. Black company series from Glen Cook. - Those are verry well, magic system is somehow poor when you readed thos from Erikson, but story is... what sould i say... Ancient-realistic. III. The Fionavar Tapestry trylogy from Guy Gavriel Kay. - This one gives you a feeling if this could happend to you. once my favorite. a miss it somehow this world.

I don't really read a lot of "series" I guess. I voted Harry Potter, because it's the only one of those choices I've read and like.

The most recent series that I read, and enjoyed, was the Dragonlance series I read as a child. It's been years since I've read them, so I can't recall if the writing was good at all or if the characters were developed very well.

All I can remember is that I liked them for what they were worth.
A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider god-fearing and pious. On the other hand, they do less easily move against him, believing that he has the gods on his side.

I've read over 50 books in the Dragonlance Saga, pretty good books. But after reading 50 I got a little bored with the setting.

Where should I start with them, in your opinion? What book should I read first?

ckerr, nothing's wrong with us. That's why Potter got so few votes.

Start with the Chronicles series.(Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winter Night, and Dragons of Spring Dawning.) The Chronicles starts off the whole series. Next read the Legends Trilogy(Time of the Twins, War of the Twins, and Test of the Twins). Those are the "holy six." After that its kinda up to you. Heres a website that has the suggested reading list. HERE

Let me put it like this; there is only one series I own every book in, and that is the Discworld series (I don't count the maps and so on as books). Pratchett is an evocative, funny, incisive, clever writer, who creates real characters with more humanity than some people in the world. Not only is it funny its also a good social commentary, at that!

The LOTR series is the best written on the list and I didn't feel like thinking of another series. Althogh the Timeline-191 books are good (Including Great War, American Empire and Settling Accounts series)

Harry Turteldove is an okay writer. I just wish he would stay away from the sex scenes in his books. They are poorly written and pull down on the books 'coolness' effect.

But they are nothing compared to LotR.
