This has been discussed before, and there are much better side to side pictures that show the resemblance. It does indeed have many similarities, especially without Dorne, and I would say its almost certain that the shape of Ireland inspired Martin when it came to creating the South. There are just too many similarities for it to be a coincidence.

Nah. Really take a look at it and the South is Ireland inverted. This isn't a case of O HEY WHEN YOU SQUINT AND HOLD IT SIDEWAYS IT KINDA LOOKS SIMILAR. GRRM used Ireland for the South.

If we ignore half of Westeros then yes it does look like Ireland but then it is not Westeros looking like Ireland it is a bit of it that looks like Ireland.

big deal, it excludes the north. The south is clearly based on an upside map of ireland, The geography even fits. mountains, rivers, towns hills all in the same places

um...yes it does...it was based on Ireland and then add a little imagination for Dorne and then the North which can be said to be an inverted scotland. the resemblance is uncanny when you compare it to Middle-Earth for example that looks totally unique and not seen before. no one is saying it is a shamless copy paste but come'on even the major cities can be found in the same places as major cities in westeros...
