Obama Finally Backs Gay Marriage (Publicly)

In a surprising move considering the upcoming election, Obama has finally confirmed in an interview that he is done playing the "my viewpoint is evolving" game and outright supported gay marriage. He stressed, of course, that this was just a personal opinion and that he still believes it should be up to the states. Then he rambled on a bit about his belief changing because his daughters have gay parents and there are gay people in the military or whatever.

Anyway, I found it surprising that he'd make such a comment before the election. Some seemed to think he was hesitant to do so because it may hurt him in the black vote but I see that as unlikely. Very likely he decided that the support among the liberals was being hurt by his refusal to outright support gay marriage more than his support among any other demographic would be by doing so.

To me at least, the US concept of marriage has always been somewhat confusing. When the term is used here, does it refer to marriage ceremonies performed in religious institutions or a secular ceremony granting equal legal rights?

The US population is 72% white, 12% black 16% other. You can see from that, even if all of the black population voted for Obama, it wouldnt be even near enough to make even (have 50% of the population on Obama's side). So clearly, Obama won the previous election by a lot of votes from white and other population types. Meaning, if white people vote for a black presidant then clearly blacks can vote for a white presidant. Then, there is no correlation between the colour of the voter and the colour of the presidant. It isn't racist. It is a fact. I go to a community college that is predominately black. When asked who they will vote for and why, most answer "Obama because he is black." It is just a factor that they can relate to. Just like you relate to people in certain aspects and become friends. Voting for a lot of people is the same. If you say that a large portion of blacks didn't vote for Obama because he was black then you're just silly. A lot of whites didn't vote for him because he was black as well, I just don't believe it was a larger number.

Govt is in the business of marriage so either the Republican Majority propose a bill removing every right and benefit for straights or we make it fair for both groups. Or we keep discriminating base on personal and religious perspective.

To add to that though... the 2008 election saw about a 2% increase in voter turnout for blacks and hispanics and blacks voted 97% for Obama but to put that in perspective blacks usually vote Democrat and 90% of everyone who turned out to vote for Obama and was black would of voted Dem regardless.

Yes, they should be able to have a relationship, maybe even marry - just don´t pull it out of proportions, you can hardly read one site on the internet without the gays being mentioned (mostly as an insult, tough).

Even though he goes on to say that it is his own opinion and he still believes it is up to the states, like it or not he is president and his opinions and ideas color everything he and his party does.
