    Default Web Site Design

    Hey,

I have rehosted my domain and as part of that I want to redesign my web site. In the past it was only used to show some photos so now I want to be a little more creative.

My hosting company has Joomla, Wordpress and other open source tools as part of their package - I know they are free, what I mean is they are integrated to make it easy to just push their content to the site. They have a load of others too I don't recall off-hand what they are though.

I am thinking about the top level design now, I did design and create a number of company intranet and internet sites years ago, but a lot of that was done with HTML/Css and written directly with the tags and a text editor. My last site used some other package but it was just images.

I'd like to make the whole with some more interesting functionality utilising php, html, javascript, css - whatever works, with some images, a blog and whatever else seems like a good idea.

So... Does anyone have any opinions on decent s/w for web site creation - the price range I'm looking for is, um, free I do know html and css but am rusty, same with javascript but I have worked with Java for 12+ years (and before that Ada83/95) so I'm more than happy to try coding.

    Anyone used Joomla or wordpress?

    thanks,

    I've used both.

Wordpress is definitely easier to work with, however you'll almost always maintain that strict blog feeling. Joomla's not exactly the most user-friendly software, you'll struggle to simply do things like get rid of a search box, etc.
