Why is this film so well received by critics ?
It's a about a dumb girl that gives her voice to one of the most pathetic villains in history , just to get some dick .

NOTE : I do not hate the movie but when i see how overrated it is it gets me less happy .

Now i saw The little Mermaid has better rating then Tarzan,Hercules and even The Lion King.I will never understand this , i shouldn't have started this reading about Disney . For some reason Black Cauldron was a critical failure i guess people don't like dark and grimy , teenage mermaids are much better .

To be fair, there are some movies that are just considered classics by people my age.

I respectfully disagree with this one. Lol.

Perhaps the critics rate it with 3-6 year old children in mind. In which case it's the Raging Bull of little kiddies movies.

Iirc; Little Mermaid was the last Disney film released where the animators black line is used, after that all Disney movies have coloured lines.

    wants the handsome young prince.

But the Evil old woman wants to rule the world.

Again my point is that this movie is not a disaster or something but such high rating on such a " respectable " site is really a annoyance to me .

When a studio makes a film for kids they aren't looking to change societies views of what is beautiful. Nor are they trying to confuse kids by making the heroine frightening and the wicked witch pretty.

Now seems to me you really stated this thread to discuss an underling fascination with male genitalia and kids films, I suggest you might be better off talking about this in the self help thread.

90% "Fresh" rating just means that 90% of the reviews were positive for the movie.

It clearly means that is is like 90% good and 10% bad. Like, duh!

The movie is "rated" at 90% because it effectively achieved the goal of the film and it did so with clarity and entertainment. "The Little Mermaid" might have 90% on Rotten Tomatoes but that doesn't mean it is a groundbreaking, earth shattering film that wowed the critics and made them remember why they all loved movies in the first place. It just means that the critics felt that the movie was a successful attempt at storytelling.

It was groundbreaking. The Little Mermaid was the beginning of the Disney Renaissance that broke the decades long Disney trend of releasing entertaining but mediocre animated films and began a stretch of true classics. Just look at this list of Disney movies in chronological order starting from 1970:

    • The Aristocats - December 24, 1970
    • Robin Hood - November 8, 1973
    • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh - March 11, 1977
    • The Rescuers - June 22, 1977
    • The Fox and the Hound - July 10, 1981
    • The Black Cauldron - July 24, 1985
    • The Great Mouse Detective - July 2, 1986
    • Oliver & Company - November 13, 1988
    • The Little Mermaid - November 14, 1989
    • The Rescuers Down Under - November 16, 1990
    • Beauty and the Beast - November 22, 1991
    • Aladdin - November 25, 1992
    • The Lion King - June 15, 1994
    • Pocahontas - June 16, 1995
    • The Hunchback of Notre Dame - June 19, 1996
    • Hercules - June 14, 1997
    • Mulan - June 5, 1998
    • Tarzan - June 12, 1999

The Little Mermaid sparked a huge uptick in film quality, production values, acting, and pretty much everything else. It was the harbinger of movies that were just as good as the all time classics Disney produced from the 1940's through 1960's.

In additon, The Little Mermaid probably has the best music of any Disney movie.

My main point of this thread is that the movie is OVERRATED .

I sincerely doubt that i am the only one thinking that this movie sends a bad message to young girls and boys , and I also fail to understand why do you think that i have an obsession with genitalia in kids films .

You can manipulate any children's film easily into a bad message.
Hell, you can do that with most adult films, but children's ones are particularly susceptible.

Lion King- you are born with your place in life. If you try to escape it, you are a monster who deserves death.

Cinderella- female ambition should be directed towards becoming a wealthy housewife. Success is measured through the wealth of the person you marry, and you will always get divine help if you deserve it.

    I could go on

http://www.cracked.com/funny-4485-cl...disney-movies/ Not even to get into more complex messages

I'm not saying you are incorrect, necessarily, just that the arguments you use are flimsy.

Well maybe they all have bad messages , but again i just say that i find the movies rating to high for what it delivers ( even to kids ) .

The Lion King is so much better... It's like animal Hamlet.

But we have to live with overratings like this.

No, what Rahl said is literally how it is. 90% of the critic reviews were positive (which would be anything from 6/10 up I think). If you look closely, you can see the average rating directly below the "Fresh" score.
It is 8.0 for Mermaid and 8.2 for Lion King (89% "Fresh").
So Lion King is actually rated higher, if only by a little, than Little Mermaid.

I truly love the Little Mermaid. A lot of young woman do like the film, and if you can mange to get the conversation onto this film without sounding very odd, you can keep them talking for a decent amount of time.
Not a big fan of the story line, as I cant help but think that anyone that stupid, doesn’t deserve to live happily ever after.
The music in the Lion King is a mile ahead of any other Disney films.

Might be close if you count the Elton John versions, but those aren't actually in the movie.

Heeey! Ricky Martin in Hercules was the best ever, deal with it .

And the movies before The Little Mermaid are good, too. But I agree they changed (maybe not for better, they just became... different).
