Yeah it does. You can get catapults and better units by constructing buildings which you will be able to build as you progress through the game.

Im not sure if i stated that i am playing SS 6.4.Does it make a difference?
Was checking the building browser to see upgrades at barracks and what kind of infantry i can expect and it wasnt showing me late period units.

yep, because you need specific events to happen in order to be able to recruit knights in shiny armor etc.
edit: for example in 1200 (turn 100 if you play early campaign) you get the heavy mail event that gives some new units to all factions ( I think )

What do you mean? they both last about 450-600 turns if I am right.

Early era starts you with more rebel factions and significantly less advanced units. You won't get any catapults until you construct a building that can build catapults.

This question would probably be answered better in the SS forums.
