Default SMART: Failure predicted on Hard Disc 4: ?

Umm so all of a sudden two days ago my laptop got extremely slow... extremely

    When this start appearing

not the best pic but it says

SMART: Failure predicted on Hard Disc 4: WDC WD5000DEVT-22AORTO- (31)

Warning: immediately back up your data and replace your hard disc drive. A failure may be imminent

    Press F1 to continue

I didnt really know what to do so launched a factory reset which took about 25 hours... unfortunately due to my own stupidity as I left the room I guess I hit the battery cord with my foot and unplugged it so right as my laptop was close to finishing the reset the battery died...

Anyways now it wont even start properly...

    Back to my main question

what can I do about this hard disk failure issue?

What happens when you try to boot the system? Does the system get past the splash screen and freeze on a black screen or something else like no power at all?

Unfortunately a SMART message like that can mean that the drive is failing and should be backed up and replaced. A factory reset probably won't do the trick here. Now that drive may not die immediately but it is in it's final days/weeks/years. Maybe it will last until you buy a new system - maybe not. It's not 100% predictable. Good luck!

Since you have a laptop I'd personally recommend taking it to a shop and let them swap out the drive. There is a possibility though that CHKDSK could be used to identify and fix any bad sectors on the drive and isolate them - that might give your drive a little more life. Good luck!

Well I can't say for certain as you'll need to factor in local labor yourself. But for a decent HDD $100-140US should do the trick to buy the drive. You can order it yourself off of Newegg or the like and take it to a shop and have them install it.

Also figure in that you're going to need to backup your files somehow. If you can do it yourself then you will not have to pay someone else to do it.

One more thing - ask for the old drive back just so it's not floating out there with all your info on it. Good luck!

Last time this happened to me I got 2 weeks before the drive died.

Yes it's usually the end of days for a drive when you get that warning. But then again I've saved a drive or two using CheckDisk and got it to limp along for awhile past that. SMART isn't entirely focused - it's just a general predictive tool that can be wrong on occasion.
