Default Computer won't even turn on

    Hello.

My girlfriend's computer started acting up a few days ago by freezing with horizontal, thin white lines across the screen, forcing her to turn off her computer to restart. According to her the screen got brighter and brighter when it did this before she turned it off.

Anyway, today it made a "dink" sound, and then shut down without any warning. And now the power button won't even light up, and the computer won't turn on.

A little bit more info, a while back a headphone jack broke off and fell into the computer. Every once in a while you can hear it rattling around in the computer. Ever since the problem started happening with the screen and now this we haven't heard the jack rattling around...Do you think it's possible it has gotten lodged somewhere and that is causing a problem?

This is a major problem cause this is the second computer she has needed to use this year...She borrowed it from her mom after hers had a major issue. And she can't afford to get a new computer.

Anyway, does anyone have any advice to offer? I'd really appreciate it.

Well have you opened it to see if you can find the jack? possibly shorting something out?

I didn't open it yet. I don't want to unless I have to.

Ya I would open it up, if the button isn't even lighting up it could be the power supply.

How are going to clean out all the dirt and dust bunnies and find out what else fell in besides the phone jack?

It'd ba a Hell of of a bad time for the jack to fall on something and short your system out. Chances are slim but not impossible.

    So it's definitely possible...When I realized that yesterday I thought maybe...just maybe...

How easy is it to open the insides of a laptop?

you really need to open up the case, and find the jack!

it could be that your graphics card or cpu were over heating. A jack stuck inside the fan could of course cause this.

First thing i would do is take off the case panel, find the jack and remove it, try powering back up and check to see if the fan on the psu (power supply unit) is spinning (the fan can be found at the back of the comp next to power cable. If the fan on the psu is not spinning then the "dink" you heard could of been the psu blowing unfortunetly! and a replacement would be needed. but i can not guarantee a replacement would solve the problem as something else could have blown!
If the fan is spinning on the psu, but you are still not getting any power (lights etc) see if the fan inside the comp is spinning. If its not then the mainboard has prob blown and you prob would be better getting a new pc.

Let us know how you get on and, Good luck

EDIT sry thought it was a desktop not a laptop. Did not see posts 6 & 7

    Thank you Irishron.

I will probably wait until the tech guys on campus are back (won't be until Monday) before I do anything. I'm not particularly skilled and I'm not willing to risk further damage to the computer, especially since it isn't mine, unless there is no other choice.

if it's your gf's and you arent a pc expert i'd def go for the safer option. (so you dont cop an earfull).

my sisters laptop is running like poo atm but so far have only fiddled with it lightly...(if something did go wrong when i was doing something man i'd get it).

ofc if you do decide to do it yourself am all ears..

Well I have fiddled with their stuff before, but it was never inside the PHYSICAL computer. So that's why I'm especially nervous.

If it's someone else's your call, maybe left for others to do it, then.

Pretty much why I'm going to take it into the tech place on campus either today or tomorrow.
