Default Biden’s office rejected Chinese official’s attempt to defect

The office of Vice President Joe Biden overruled State and Justice Department officials in denying the political asylum request of a senior Chinese communist official last February over fears the high-level defection would upset the U.S. visit of China’s vice president, according to U.S. officials.

The defector, Wang Lijun, was turned away after 30 hours inside the U.S. Consulate Chengdu and given over to China’s Ministry of State Security, the political police and intelligence service.

The request was denied on pure political grounds and not on whether the threat to the defectors life was credible.

Blinken, according to the officials, feared China would cancel the upcoming visit by Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, whose visit was to be hosted by Biden, unless Wang was sent away from the consulate as soon as possible.

Don't be surprised if the blind from that other thread have the same fate. Is the Era of defection over or have Americans lost their manliness ?

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Apparently, only Mexicans need apply

Of course maybe the defector is a major and was trying to elude justice by lying his way into a free visa to America, lets wait and see.

Wang was the fired Police Chief who fell out with his boss, a rising star and power in the CCP; rumours concerning his activities on behalf of his boss don't paint him in the best light, and considering how politically explosive his testimony has turned out to be, the opposing faction in the Party may not be too hard on him.

Chen, on the other hand, is a hot potato that the Obama Administration may not feel that they can hand back to the Communists.

The US's obligation is to protecting it's interests, not saving Chinese officials from the "Harmonious People's Court of the Eternally Enlightened Jade Dragon Figurines" or whatever. Our side (not just "Joe Biden") determined that whatever we're working on with China is more important than protecting this guy, bringing no benefit to ourselves. Even during the Cold War, if you wanted to defect, you had to make it worthwhile.

Or do it quietly. Hopping off in LA and claiming political asylum is not so hard. Loudly and publicly trying to claim asylum while still in China, is impossible. Even at the height of the Cold War, you could not have done that in the Soviet Union. Even if the US said 'Yes', how are you going to get them out of the Embassy? China would just park army trucks and cops around the embassy and arrest him when he walked out.

You'd have to agree with China that he could go, and China would never agree - because it would be such a public loss of face for them. If the person was important enough, what you might be able to do is agree, for a price (and the price would be big) that he go back into Chinese custody, and later on the Chinese show mercy and release him, and THEN he discretely crosses the border somewhere and claims asylum. I'd imagine it would be letting a Chinese spy go or similar. It's not worth it for the US. This guy is just a local police chief, he doesnt have anything valuable that the US wants.

But not this guy - he's not important enough.

The blind human rights guy they had in the US embassy fubared things too. Loudly and publicly claiming asylum in the US Embassy in China just ensures that you can never be able to claim asylum.

He would have been better off heading for the Swiss embassy, or ringing around to see who'd take him before he fled.

One thing that the article says that I find confusing is, where does Biden derive the power to make these kinds of decisions?

This guy is linked to Bo Xilai which makes him toxic. The idea of asylum has nothing to do with protecting corrupt politicians.

    QFT.

I wonder how much info the US Consulate got out of Wang on Bo and other senior par officials before he left?

Apparently Chen has left the Embassy voluntarily, been conveyed to a medical facility and reunited with his family.

Chen Guangcheng left US embassy 'after family threats'

Mr Chen was taken to a Beijing hospital after leaving the US embassy

Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng says he left his refuge in the US embassy in Beijing after Chinese authorities made death threats to family members.
Mr Chen told Associated Press he left after assurances he would be free to stay in China and study, but that he now feared for his safety.
He was speaking in hospital where he had been taken after a deal the US said "reflected his choices and our values".
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in Beijing for high-level talks.
Mr Chen had been at the US embassy for a week after escaping from house arrest in his home village in Shandong province.
The blind activist's case has threatened to overshadow the bilateral talks, which are due to focus on issues like Syria and trade.
Earlier Mr Chen's lawyer said the activist was "happy" after receiving "clear assurances" from Beijing.
But AP quoted Mr Chen, 40, as saying he had been told by US officials of the threat from the Chinese authorities.
The agency quoted one US official as denying knowledge of the threat but the official did say Mr Chen was told his family would be returned to his home village in Shandong.
'Please help me' The BBC's Michael Bristow in Beijing says both US and Chinese officials had said Mr Chen left the embassy his own volition but now a more complicated story is emerging.
A close friend of Mr Chen, Zeng Jinyan, herself an activist in Beijing, told the BBC she had spoken to Mr Chen and confirmed he had opted to stay in China to protect his family.

    • Born 12 Nov 1971
    • Nicknamed the 'Barefoot Lawyer'
    • Went blind as a child
    • Campaigned for women forced to have abortions or sterilisation under China's one child per family policy
    • Jailed for four years in 2006 for disrupting traffic and damaging property
    • Released from jail in 2010 placed under house arrest
    • Daughter barred from school during much of 2011, reports say
    • Escapes house arrest, April 2012

Ms Zeng said that Mr Chen "had no choice" because "thugs with sticks" were waiting for him and his family in their home village in Shandong.
She said: "It's impossible, he couldn't do anything. He said, 'please help me'."
Bob Fu, of Texas-based rights advocacy group ChinaAid, said reliable sources had also told it that Mr Chen had left the embassy because serious threats to his immediate family members were made by the Chinese government.
"We are deeply concerned about this sad development if the report about Chen's involuntary departure is true," Mr Fu said.
Hillary Clinton had earlier issued a statement saying: "I am pleased that we were able to facilitate Chen Guangcheng's stay and departure from the US embassy in a way that reflected his choices and our values.
"Mr Chen has a number of understandings with the Chinese government about his future, including the opportunity to pursue higher education in a safe environment," she said.
"Making these commitments a reality is the next crucial task. The United States government and the American people are committed to remaining engaged with Mr Chen and his family in the days, weeks, and years ahead."
Mr Chen had been driven from the US embassy to a VIP section of Chaoyang Hospital for a check-up, before being united with his wife and two children.
He was accompanied to the hospital by US ambassador Gary Locke and other US officials.
Some 20 police officers ordered journalists to leave and detained one protester carrying a banner reading "Free Guangcheng. Democracy for China", Agence France-Presse news agency reported.
Earlier, Mr Chen's lawyer, Li Jinsong, said he had spoken to his client on the phone. He said Mr Chen was "very happy and wants to hug all his friends".
Mr Li said the dissident had told him he now had "true freedom", his rights were now protected by the national law and he was "a free citizen".
The affair has strained US-China relations at a delicate time.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said: "What the US needs to do is to stop misleading the public and stop making every excuse to shift responsibility and conceal its own wrongdoing."
Mr Liu earlier said China was "strongly dissatisfied" and that the US should apologise.
Mr Chen had planned his escape for months, scaling the wall the authorities had built around his house and then being driven hundreds of miles to Beijing, where activists say he stayed in safe houses before fleeing to the embassy.
Several people involved in Mr Chen's escape have been detained or have disappeared in recent days.

"In terms of trying to somehow negotiate with the Chinese a means to guarantee his safety within China, there's just too much chance that the Chinese regime would renege and then the administration would look terrible," Johnson said.

We should take in dissidents from countries we don't like.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Unless they're real criminals.

Rome does not pay traitors who kill their chief. That's our job...

I don't like China. They're waging a war on women. That's not nice.
