    *NOOB ALERT*

well if anyone remembers me i used to play this mod before the patch was out and boy did i use a hell lot of cheats. my main problem and reason that i use cheats is that im terrible at controlling public order in settlements. im pretty ok at slaughtering barbarians. only problem is the ctds. so now i decided to grow some b*lls and be a man and stop using cheats once and for all!!! but of course not without some help that is. any1 have any good suggestions on how to maintain public order and get a positive income? im planning to try this in the 355 campaign as julian. or procopius

    also a few questions:
    1.Fire arrows.. good?
    2.mercenaries worth filling your ranks?

    1. Fire arrows are useful if you're trying to get the enemy to panic and rout.
    2. Mercenaries can be useful... depends on who/what you're hiring, for a given task. What I like to do is hire cheap troops to garrison newly constructed border forts. It takes time to get some cheap units to where your armies are sometimes so they're good for setting up a quick defense. You can always replace them somewhere down the line. I also like to experiment with some of the more elite mercs, so when I hire those, I send them back to my capital to give them betters weapons and armor.

    And yeah, I remember you.

Procopius IMO is the best choice to start a campaign with less problems! And it is so beautiful killing Valentinian and Valens!!!

Yeah, I've already killed Valens. Only downside is that the Sassanids are slowly taking over all their territory at the moment...

Yes you are right FCG, and this is the main reason why I launched a full scale attack against Valentinian........Now I have all all Greece, Illyrricum, almost all Italy (excluded Ravenna and Mediolanum but it is an easy task now!).
I preferred to let valens attack me in Nicomedia, an watch the Persian do their job, then when I'll control Gaul, Spain and Africa......that, will be the moment to destroy what remains of Valens....muahahaahahaah!!!!....

I am a newcomer to SAI and managed to get past the first few intense years of the 355 campaign quite well. One key point is money, I disbanded useless expensive units such as Preventores, Superventores, and set taxes as high as possible. To deal with public order, it's quite easy. See what is the main religion of a settlement, and how is the trend. Destroy or build religious buildings according to this.

Example1: region X has 70% pagan population, and the official religion is christianity due to a church. Demolish the church immediately and unrest will drop.
Example2: region Y has 40% christian population, 60% pagan. Trend is +20% christian, +5% pagan. Official religion is pagan due to Shrine of Mithras. Demolish the shrine of Mithras, because you will have more unrest in the immediate, but in the long term christianity will prevail.

I took me some times to understand how to deal it, but after the first critical turns the situation stabilized and got sufficient income to build law and infrastrucuters. And of course restore Paganism!

    julian. or procopius
Procopius. smaller area, more defensible, less unrest and better cash flow position, also decent starting troops.

    1.Fire arrows.. good?
Ok for destroying morale and routing but are less accurate.

    2.mercenaries worth filling your ranks?

FCG made a good point. I will only add that in the beginning u don't want to overdue on merc since u will not have much in starting cash. Do it slowly over time as suggested with low upkeep merc to maintaing vital crossing forts. later as your econ picks up add better quality like pedites.

Another great point and something i didn't even paid attention to. I guess i will try this way and see how it works. In all my campaigns i tend to do it old fashioned way. Where order is good i increase taxes. In cities where order is low even after decreasing taxes i simply walk my garrison out and besiege the town after it rebels. U can do this successfully in spain, n africa and interior gaul where outside threat is low. I wouldn't reccomend doing it it hot border zones as well as cities where u get your top grade troops. Pluses are few; after successful siege u can rape and loot giving u more money. also the unrest will stop and u will be able to chose the religion that you want. Down side is that u will have to spend some troops from needy areas to prompt the sieges. Its all doable.

I have one last question that is bit off the topic and hope someone can help me. I m looking to add legio ripenses or armatus to towns of Carhae, petra, heraclea chersonessos for all my roman factions but have no idea which files to tweak. I had been successful in doing it in Flagellum dei but SAI is little different. If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

M/M is a good way to start, at least its balanced. Personally I would have avoided using Valentinianus and his border troops, unless the Franks actually cornered you and you had no choice. At least you inflicted quite heavy losses on him in the process.
