[RTRVII AAR] 'Courage of a Spartan'
(Written by Lorian)
Note: This AAR isnt historically accurate, but its played out on my campaign experiences. Battles and Wars are named with a sense of imagination, they are not "actual" named events that had happened in history.

Chapter I
Finacial and Diplomatic Affairs
Areus Agiad, the King of the City-State of Sparta, looked worried-some at his list of papers. He leaned back in his chair at the treasury room in Sparta and focused on the last couple of events that transpired before this day. About a month ago, he had recently encountered a brutal disagreement with the Leauge of Aitolia and they declared war in his nation. The last couple of years had been productive for Areus; the birth rate of Sparta had increased by at least half of what it was before the sudden population boom. This demanded more housing, and that meant more soldiers. This was a benefit for Areus, now he could raise up a much larger Spartan Army to counter the attacks that the Free Peoples would possibly attempt. With the reamining treasury money he had, Areus sent out his builders to contruct watchtowers to watch Sparta's borders.
The production went quite fast, and soon reports of the borderly activities reached the King's attention, and he could now watch his enemies moves. He surveyed his map of Peloponnese with a curious glance. There was a major city to his north. Megalopolis (as the Greeks Called it) was a large city, with a very stable economy. Areus knew the city had a good source of income from both fertile lands and from its coastal income. He quickly decided to send his oldest daughter's husband (a most trusted general and family member of the king's), Archedamius Eurypondit, to capture the city.
Now he turned his attention to Sparta's diplomacy. Currently, they were at war with Aitolia and the Rebels. It was quite easy to see that these Waring neighbors hated each other. An Ally of the Independent City-States, Areus knew that he would have a very reliable ally to help him win this war. It troubled him however, to see that The Independent CIty-States were allied both with Sparta and with Aitolia.
Sending his reports to the Council, the European nations quickly learned of what had transpired in the City-State of Sparta. Areus noted that the war between Sparta and the Free-Peoples had arisen. 'The Sparta War' had begun...
Chapter II
At the Gates of Hades
Archedamius had marched for two days across the Peloponnese Mainland until he reached the city of Megalopolis. Once he reached the gates of the city, he had received word that another Free-Peoples army had arrived from the West to aid the city if the Spartan army so much as passed through the walls. Archedamius new he wouldn't lose this fight, after all he was commanding Sparta. Recently, his father and King of the City-State of Sparta, Areus Agiad, had passed a notion demanding an enlistment of soldiers in all provinces, to help fight in 'The Sparta War'. He divided all armies into legions, similar to that of The SPQR in Rome. The first Legion, or commonly called the 1st Spartan Legion, was placed under Archedamius's command.
Once his legion had arrived at the Gates, he knew he would either take the city with a very large number of casualties, or he would die in the attempt. It wasn't a fight he knew that the City-State of Sparta would be victorious over. The military was strong, but Sparta's armies were small and very puny compared to the larger armies of the Free-Peoples. But the armies they had trained were full or mercenaries, peasants, and weak infantry.
Once the Siege Tower was ready to assault the City, an unexpected turn of events happened. The General of the garrisoned force of Megalopolis ordered his troops to march out of the city and meet Archedamius on the battlefield. Archedamius quickly ordered his men to abandon the siege tower and line up to march on the opposing army.
Archedamius sent his famed Spartan Soldiers to the Front line of the legion. The mercenary spearmen of the Free-Peoples meet in a charge that was intended to weaken the Spartan morale. But the Garrison General of the Free-Peoples must not have faced a Spartan before. The Mercenary spearmen quickly fell to the Elite and powerful spears of the Spartans. While the Spartans occupied the front lines, the Garrisoned General sent his troops to outflank the first line, and ordered a band of skirmishers and spearmen to attack the reserve units Archedamius had if the Spartan numbers began to waver. Archedamius had been expecting this move, and his archers fired upon the spearmen, and they were quickly felled in a short rain of arrows from the Spartan Archers.
With a very unplanned move, the Garrison General sent all his troops out of the city and attempted to throw all of Archedamius troop's into a chaotic battle on all sides. The plan worked, but Archedamius allowed his forces to fall out of the battle line. His much more powerful Spartans and Sparta Spearmen quickly destroyed all of the Garrison Commander's forces. The Garrison Commander panicked, and all his troops began to flee towards the city gate, while being killed by the continuous volleys of Archedamius' archers. But Archedamius felt his stomach drop when he looked northwest. The Free-Peoples reinforcements had arrived.
If their was a point in battle Archedamius feared he would lose, it was this moment. He ordered his troops to forget the routed garrison army, and he relined his army to face the Free-Peoples reinforcements. He planted his Spartan's in the front, his spears in the middle, and behind were his archers. With a slow and steady process, the archers eventually shot down most of the reinforcing Free-Soldiers. But some remained still in good morale, and the reinforcing Free-Peoples General sent in all his infantry at the Spartans. Again, the Free-People infantry were weak and incompetent to the far more powerful, aggressive, and skilled Spartans. They were quickly killed and routed. All that remained where the Reinforcing generals archers, who rained arrows on Archedamius's Sparta Spearmen.
They fell to a couple arrows, but their armor was well forged, and they survived what could have been a bloody rain of arrows. The Spartan archers fired back, and took down a few of the opposing archers. The Garrison General saw the opening, and he re rallied his forces and they flanked Archedamius. But Archedamius' forces didn't fall that easily. He sent in his Spartans, now traded places with the Spartan Spearmen (who are now replaced with the Spartans, in order to let the Spartans rest for reserve troops) and they very quickly stopped the doomed flank.
The reinforcing General charged on the invincible wall of Spartan Spears, and with his stupidity, he was killed in the charge he hoped would rally his troops. The entire force of the reinforcing army routed, and ran straight through Megalopolis's gates and to the city's center. The remaining garrison army had rallied at the Gate, and Archedamius had rallied his troops at the siege tower. The Garrison Commander charged with his spearmen, and the whole force aimed at the incredibly small spartan army.
Archedamius had trained his troops well, and the line of Spartan Soldiers held together, and after a minute of clashing titans, the Garrison General was killed by none other than Archedamius himself. All the Free-Peoples soldiers had routed, and all the remaining troops of the enitre army were gathered in the city center. As the garrison fled to the center, The Spartans quickly killed all the fleeing troops in their path.
The Spartan army ran through the streets and every foe was killed. The Spartans army eventually reached the city center where the last remaining force of the Free-Peoples made their stand. Archedamius blasted his horn, and the whole spartan army charged at the remaining force in the city center.
They screamed like frightened women, and the Spartans killed every last soldier that had opposed them in this siege. Archedamius blasted the horn again as the 1st Spartan Legion roared in cheer. While the cheering ensued, Archedamius chanted the spartan war cry. "We are Victorious! We are Victorious! WE ARE SPARTAAAA!"
And the rest of the city silenced, as every citizen saw what had transpired, and what they were capable of. Archedamius entered the Council Chambers of the City and lined up all the nobles outside for the Spartans to execute. Yes, he knew what the city would come to. King Areus had wanted a vibrant, live and prosperous city. But with so much chaos in the streets and dead nobles being executed, Archedamius ordered the extermination of two thirds the population. However the cost of this loss, he the income of the city began to strengthen the City-State of Sparta's economy instantly. Word from Sparta had come that they had began to profit more and now had money to send Archedamius relief troops and reinforcements. Archedamius smiled, not only had they captured an important settlement in Peloponnese, but they had won their first battle of 'The Sparta War'.
Chapter III
Medals, Victories, and Occupations
Areus was glad to hear the news. A messenger had recently arrived at Sparta, who said he was bearing word from Archedamius. The messenger was red in the face, and he was out of breath. He began with a gasping breathe, " My king, General Archedamius has captured Megalopolis. They suffered minimal casualties, and all the Free-Peoples forces have been routed or destroyed."
"Good," he responded with a smile. "Now rest for the night, at dawn I want you to ride back to Megalopolis, with this notice." He handed a paper to the messenger. "Its a detailed account of the City-State of Sparta's occupation in Megalopolis. Give this to Archedamius and he'll know what to do, it lists all the needs to establish our government in the city."
"Very well," and the messenger left to rest.
Again sorry, I'm not used to the scripting employed to this forums. I will repost the AAR (since I dont know how to edit existing ones) If someone can delete this topic, please do. I will repost it in a different topic.
