Besides, at that point virtually all of the Peloponnese (iirc) was controlled by the Byzantine Empire.

Everyone says it, Constantine VII is the worst Emperor in History, frankly any of Histories, he ruined the Army by spending money on this useless mechanical things. Was in an art gallery yesterday. Lightning was poor (because they wanted the gold to seem even more shiny), so my pics aren't great either, but luckily I found some better photos online.

This:


is a crucifix from the 11th century. Now what makes this special, you might ask?

Well apparently they were either lazy or the sculptor didn't know how to make heads, so they decided to graft a head from an ancient Roman statuette onto it.

So who's the head you might ask? Presumably a female member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty.



If female Jesus ain't progressive I don't know what is.
