    Default towers and prisoners

Is there way to make tower stop firing other then evacuating units close to it? My faction leader was killed by a cannon tower shot while pursuing fleeing enemy.

I often just executed the prisoner that I caught in battle. It increase the dread factor of the general and make the peasants in a settlement he govern less likely to revolt. The question is, what advantage do I get if I simply release the prisoner?

There is no way to stop towers firing I believe, other than what you said. It would be useful if you could though!

Releasing prisoners can help you in a couple of ways, one you said, increasing chivalry. I find high chivalry generals alot more useful than high dread ones, especially early in the game, they allow for a much increased population growth in a settlement. High chivalry generals also help your troops morale in battle, and they also allow you to aquire templar/hospitaller knights guilds faster in any settlement they are left in.

I believe releasing prisoners also helps with your faction reputation and relations with others.

I've been executing prisoners every time, figuring that the ransom $$$ isn't very much and releasing them means they'll come back to bite me. But you've just made me rethink that.

Releasing prisoners doesn't give you the negative diplomatic effects executing them does..

If you capture a family member and/or his bodyguard, you can make a lot of money by ransoming him (you may even be lucky and capture him again!). Ransoming doesn't give any negative or positive values, though it is possible to get some chivalry that way. If there are less than 80 prisoners you can do what you like, though in SS it seems that isn't the case. Chivalry is much harder to get than dread as you can't pursue the routers at the end of a battle (that gets you "winning first") and have to do all sorts of nice things like lower taxes (risking the "bad taxman" trait) but if you can get it you will find that generals with even small amounts of chivalry will be worth whole armies of troops when it comes to maintaining order in a city and improving its population. You also have to try to fight battles at odds of around 1:1 or worse, which adds to the challenge of the game!!

However high dread can be good - In my first TATW game I always executed the enemy prisoners and was surprised to see my enemies running away from me all the time - that's what a high dread general does, though i didn't know it at the time.

As unfortunate as it is, you can't stop the towers from firing at you. I personally find it annoying that CA didn't fix this issue since it is ridiculous when you capture the entire wall or city yet the towers still fire a you. Also, I decide what to do with prisoners due to what type of war I'm fighting. If I'm trying to take over their land, I'll usually request payment for the prisoners. But, if I'm fighting a war just to cripple the nation, then I would execute them.

I've been playing mods for a while now, Third Age and Stainless Steel and I'm sure it was the same in vanilla, IIRC if you have move your units from the walls and not close to them the towers should stop shooting, no units close the towers won't shoot.

As for prisoners, there are otpins like mentoined aboved and there are also advantages and disadvantages coming out from your decisions.

Executing and extermination populace means: Your generals will be dread more then Chivalrous, your global Rep and relationships with faction won't be great.

Dread: makes your governers feared from the populace so less chane to revolt but chivalrous give you a growth bonus.

I will always release unless I need money and try to ransom them.
