Default Using PFM 2.** and greater to mod ETW

I have been closely follwoing daniu's further development of the PFM.

I have made extensive modifcations to NTW and S2TW, but I have never ventured inot ETW, because back at PFM 1.1.12, I had problems utilzing the DBEditor, packing that back in the mod.pack and getting my mods to show up in game.

I decided to get back into trying to edit ETW.

PFM 2.1.2 works fine in editing the contents of my new mod.pack for ETW, but ETW does not recognize it. None of the changes show up in game... There is quite a bit I would like to do, but just starting right now with something simple like editing units_land_stats table.

I have my mod set as a "Mod" in PFM, I have my user.script.txt located in the appropriate folder.

daniu suggested that I needto check to see if my user.script.txt is format to UNICODE...

I use notepad and Programmer's notepad... but I haven't located a way to verify that it IS unicode..

If anyone has any ideas, the help is greatly appreciated...

    Thanks for your time..

In Notepad, if you use Save As, there is a combobox next to the save button labeled "Encoding". Make sure it's set to Unicode.
Alternatively, try setting the pack to type Movie; this should get loaded in any case, without a script.txt entry. This way you can make sure the data in the pack itself is okay.

    Thanks daniu!!!

The user script was set to UTF-8, so I reset it as unicode...

Just trying some, rank depth and file/rank spacing changes... and there still doesn't seem to be any change in the game...

When I switch the pack over to "Movie" it crashes on the opening screen...

Sooo... I am not sure what I did wrong. I have all of the latest db files in the mod pack...

    Any further ideas?

    Thanks

If it crashes, that sounds like the game can't load the files because you're using a too recent db file version (i.e., one that ETW doesn't know yet because it was introduced with NTW or S2. Make sure to use the ETW packs to extract the db files you want to edit, and work from those.
The version number shown in the tree view must not be higher than the one in the same db file in ETW's latest pack.

Edit: Utf-8 might be correct, I always confuse the two...

    @daniu,

I was really perplexed at to what was wrong. I was using only packs and db files from ETW...(not any from ETW or S2TW). Thus I figured I should start from scratch again.

What I did is go back and used the example my_pack.pack from this forum. Made a new user script titled "user.empire_script.txt." with my_pack.pack called out in the text.

I just started with only units_tables and units_stats_land, made some very small changes. Changes showed up in game!!!

The only thing I could think that either I was using the wrong user script file name or I had some conflicting db file info in the previous pack file, because I had ALL the latest db files from ETW in that pack...

Going back and starting over simple made it work.

    Thanks

I have been able to get S2TW changes just fine.

Some things I have learned from daniu lately, is make sure your user script file is saved as unicode (or try UTF-8).

Also, make sure your mod pack file is set to "Mod" under pack types located under the File Pull-Down in PFM 2.1.2.

I am not sure at what level of modding you are, so I would say if you have any further problems, look in this forum location...

That way your issue can be logged in at the right place to help others...

My modding level is retired hobbyist with a tendency for extreme laziness...but when I do mod, I treat it like a job.
