I think the main thing to edit is to turn off auto save and Anti-Aliasing (which you should be able to do by selecting "AA_Quality" at the top and then choosing "AA_Off", not sure about the whole nvidia thing though). A lot depends on your computer, if you've not got a great one you don't want to be playing on the highest graphics settings with huge unit size, as big battles will either be exceedingly slow or crash outright.

If you don't get problems in or after the battles, but only in the campaign (and I assume therefore limited to the classic end-of-turn CTDs), then it's really Autosave and Anti-Virus s/w I suspect.

I've posted elsewhere on the subject, so feel free to search in case I miss anything this time around....

Over the years of playing vanilla (all 3 .exe's) I've gotten very used to the sorts of crashes the RTW engine leads to - and had a very interesting time reading a lot of this, and other similar, RTW appreciation forums - which then lead me to RSII.

Being also something of a 'security type' I also have some extra knowledge, but what I have come to believe is that many of the 'non-settings related' crashes are closely linked to the game accessing the HD and saving/changing files; in a way that I believe is now considered somewhat virus/malware-like (since RTW was written lo' these many moons ago). The CTDs we see subsequently are the AV s/w, and now sometimes Windows itself (as it's much better and more stable than the 3.1 version I first used!), protecting itself.

Long story short - I now have a standalone PC dedicated to RTW, which just has WinXP SP3 and RTW installed - nothing else and no connection to the internet. I don't have CTDs at all now (except when I find the very odd map glitch, that dvk' then goes and fixes).

By Occam's Razor and the KISS principle - I have become convinced that AV s/w is the root of many CTDs that people are having. If you cannot have the luxury of a separate PC, then disconnect from the internet and disable AV for any times you want to play RTW - and don't do anything else whilst you do.

I switch off AA in-game and use the Nvidia Control Panel to either 'Enhance the application setting' or to 'Override the application setting'

When you installed your nVidia drivers the nVidia Control Panel should automatically be installed as well.

Do you have the latest drivers?

This is the nVidia Control Panel. I'm changing the 'Global Settings'. However, it's also possible to have one set of settings for Global and change them for individual programs by selecting the second tab for 'Program Settings':
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The 'Program Settings' will have a drop down list of programs. It's also possible to add new entries for programs that have not been picked up:

Yes, it's quite easy to do.

A while ago I used a third party product (nHancer) rather than the nVidia Control Panel. Unfortunately, at one stage nVidia changed some basic things with how their drivers worked and the person who produced nHancer did not have the time to update the product.

    Sad day.
