Default A faction by any other name

This might be a bit stupid or silly, but have there ever been times when you've preferred to think of one faction as another one entirely? Or just simply called a faction a diffierent name?

For example, sometimes I call the Turks Persians, which I believe the Byzantines did at one point in history. I'm a fan of the Byzantine Empire, but also of Alexander the Great and the Greek Successor Kingdoms.

I just found it a bit of coincidence between the RTW Alexander and MT2W: a purple-coloured faction based in Greece is fighting a green-coloured faction based in the Middle East.

This could just be me, though.

The names are simply dumbed-down for simplicity sake. But even so, the Byzantine Empire should not be called "Greek Successor Kingdoms." That doesn't even make sense. The Eastern Roman Empire became known as the Byzantine Empire after the city of Byzantium (which later became Constantinople). The Greek city states had nothing to do with it.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. By successor kingdoms, I meant the Diadochi.

The base of it all is that, having a slight grudge against the Turks for ending the Byzantine Empire, if I ever play, I just subconciously call them Persians to make myself a bit more comfortable - you know, like the Byzantines VS the Sassanids, that type of thing.

What I was trying to ask was if anyone has ever done something similar.

After the sack of Constantinople the empire broke up int successor states for a while.

When? The two times Constantinople ever fell were after Medieval 2's 1080 start date (1204 and 1453).

It'd be more proper to call them Ottomans. Or Seljuks, if you'd prefer.

Why? Should the French be referred to as the Capets? The Spanish as Jiménez? I think part of the idea of M2TW is that family trees can become a mess with all of the adoptions, marriages, deaths, etc, but the nation still basically coheres, barring the death of all royalty. Thus the Turks represent Seljuks and Ottomans, the French represent the Capets and the Valois, the Egyptians represent the Fatimids, Ayyubids, and mamluk junta, the Byzantines represent the Komnenoi, the Angeloi, and the Palaeologoi, etc.

As for faction names, I don't like how the Moors or the Turks are named. Every other faction is named after a country, not a people (i.e., it's "Denmark," not "Danes," "Russia," not "Russians," "Spain" not "Spanish", "Egypt" not "Egyptians," etc). It may be just a little obsessive consistency tick, but I'd prefer that The Moors and The Turks be named in the same style.

So sometimes I'd prefer to think of the Moors as Al-Andalus or something instead. Whether the adjective (English, Russian, etc) would be Moorish or Andalusian, I don't really care.

The Turks could be named, I don't know, Turkey, or Turkestan, or something. Probably Turkey.

I like to think of Portugal as a fledgling state of rebels (kind of like a big, white-and-blue Tortuga) and the Moors as Arabs...

I also recall one campaign as France, where I suddenly noticed that their flag has the same colour as the flag of one of the countries in my fantasy novel - so from there on through the rest of that campaign, I just pretended that they were the same It did actually spice things up a bit

I like to think of the Scots as proto-Americans. Was not America discovered by lord Sinclair?

I like to think Denmark in the early game as Viking pirates/raiders who sack and kill along the coasts

Calling the Turks 'Persian' is a large stretch, considering most (I mean almost all) Persian speakers were east of the vanilla map's boundaries.

Calling the Timurids "Persian" might make sense. (Timur himself may not have originally been Persian, but hey, William wasn't originally English either, and his faction is still called "England/English.")

Are you posting in the right thread? Are you just proposing "arse" as a new name for the Pope or the Papal States or something?

    I haven't.

Well, I do call the Kwharziensaeswdgghfd (or whatever) Empire just the K-H-W Empire because I have no idea on how to pronounce that.

Timur never claimed a Persian title, he just ate up the post-Ilkhan states (Which some of which were Persian ruled).
