Default What kind of settings do you use for huge unit scale

Ever since I played M2TW with huge settings, it became a regular on every TW game I play. S2TW, ETW, M2TW all with their own mods and with max settings and huge units scale. Now in EB since it's a older game and requires way less resources I thought it wold be just fine, not in my case. From what I read it has to do with what the RTW engine limitations. Whats some good settings so I can enjoy EB with huge unit scale, I am using RS2 environments!

If you play on huge unit size, expect to play with the video on low-settings. EB stretches the RTW engine to the max and beyond (either you lower the video settings or prepare for lots of crashes). Butter or guns, as the macro-economists would say.

I think Foot needs to put a warning saying "You may wish to play other mods before playing this mod, as EB will destroy your ability to find other mods exciting and fulfilling".

So I did some test with the settings and got some surprising results. I lowered vegetation and grass to medium and left everything else max out. To my surprise I was getting a steady 35-50FPS over my 5-15 before. Keep in mind that I play with AA off since I play on 1920x1080 and I now use huge unit size. Also I must say that after starting a new campaign with Epeiros I had 100% less crashes period! Now I can play my favorite mod with huge unit settings and enjoy it to the MAX! I must say that playing with Macedon style phalanx were there 242 men in a unit actually feels right. Also having 100 cavalry rocks too.

I suggest lowering the settings. You'll know what I mean after you play for some time (either more than 50 provinces and/or lots of banner-full armies).

Download CFF Explorer and change the rtw app to handle more than 2gb of ram. The game only uses 2gb normally so this should make a huge difference in performance for you. (It did for me and I have 16gb of ram....so yeah) Also, only set unit detail to high so it doesn't load full unit graphics when zoomed out.

Has anybody else actually used CFF Explorer and gained performance or got reduced CTD's? If so I would be highly interested cause I have 8GB of RAM.

Yes, CFF Explorer will give you a big boost. Download CFF Explorer then follow these instructions.

Click the folder icon or go to File -> Open and browse your PC for your RTW application/exe.

Click on File Header at the left, find Characteristics at the right, and click the Click here blue button.
Tick App can handle >2GB address space.
Click OK. Save by clicking the disk icon or going to 'File -> Save.
Overwrite the file when it asks you to.

Enjoy! If you have 2GB+ of RAM it will drastically increase performance.

Thanks for the info and the video. Helped me out a lot. I haven't done any real testing yet but I can kind of tell a small difference.

Does CFF Explorer affect the games stability at all?
Were there but a tree in this godforsaken place i would have hanged myself.

I also play EB with RS2 environments and with a widescreen (1920x1080) with huge units...

I always have buildings details at lowest settings (as I can't really see any difference between hightest and lowest settings anyway) and AA turned off. For grass I use medium settings.

All other settings I have maxed out or activated... but for battles with two very large armies - when it lags a little - I reduce the unit details from highest to high, which does the trick for me.

    RAM and CTDs:

I use this "trick" to increase my actually used RAM (note: I still have WinXP 32-bit with 4GB RAM) -> 3GB Switch Workaround, works great for me at least.

As for killing CTDs (besides having enough RAM...) the best thing is to use BI.exe or ALX.exe. -> Tackle CTDs! / How to play EB with BI-exe or ALX-exe. I'm currently using the ALX.exe and haven't had a single CTD since weeks... (playing with the normal RTW.exe I often encountered after-battle-CTDs).
