I had never heard of this series until recently when I was reading about Sean Bean. I'm somewhat intrigued by this series. I have a couple questions:

Is this a television series or is it just a series of TV movies? Cause from how and when they are produced, they just seem like a series of TV movies.

Is there a lot of action in these, or are they more like dramas?

Does Sean Bean kick butt as usual?

Do you (people who have watched them) recommend them?

They're kind of old now, but they were a British action series.

Yes, Sean does kick butt. They're a good time killer, but if you have even more time to spare read the books.

I'm considering perhaps reading a couple books before trying out the series. Are they long books or fairly short?

That's not too bad. A day's reading at the rate I read.

I got the DVD box. It's essentially a slightly less charming version of Hornblower and on land. They are very nice adventure movies with quite a lot of action elements in them. Could essentially be a low budget version of the first Lord of the Rings movie.

Two sets with 7 in each so I got from the first movie to Sharpes Waterloo. I think one or two have been released since then but I haven't found them. And I really don't need them either as I don't have the time to watch them often enough to remember them .

    Two questions.

    1) In what episode is she topless

    2) And who is Liz Hurley? I recognize the name but have no idea about who she is.

But I definitely agree about the song. I made the mistake of watching it with a friend and he started to hum it every time I stopped...

Elizabeth Hurley. She was in Austin Powers

I might get the 3 "collections", with five movies for the first two and four for the 3rd. Then get the last two movies individually.

I'll be damned if you still don't have a crush on her.

46 years old and I reckon she's better looking now than she was in her teens:

The movies are great if you can get past the ridiculous electric guitar music they use lol. But yeah, Sean Bean is basically is a bad-ass in the films. Very action movie like, with kind of a low budget PBS-ish feel similar to the Hornblower films. They didn't do a bad job with the uniforms, but the combat really isn't even close haha. The scale is too small, but I guess you can't really blame them. I haven't seen the more recent Sharpe's movies though, so maybe they've improved in that regard.

I tried reading Sharpe's Rifles as well (my lib. has like an entire shelf devoted to Cornwell) but gosh, I couldn't get into at all. There was just something off-putting about the guy's writing style.

They are quite good and worth a watch if you're interested in the Napoleonic Wars; it's the role that gave Sean Bean a name in acting. Although it is low budget, which shows especially in the early episodes, the story and focus on smaller scale actio helps to overcome it. And I personally really like the intro

Oh, and if you're wondering about Bean's tendency to get killed in pretty much every role, you'll be in for a shocker when you see how often Sharpe cheats death!

Lol, I was wondering if perhaps all the times he cheats death is why he dies so often in other movies. It is the movie gods of Death keeping balance

I might buy the first five episodes on Amazon. There's a set going for 40 bucks. But there's another set going for 25-ish but only 3 episodes. So idk. We'll see.

Out of curiosity, is there any continuity between the stories or all they all stand alone episodes?

I might have read them but I didn't really know what they were, now that I think about it.

Sharpe is an ultra low budget "Zorroish" version of the Napoleonic wars. They can barely put 100 actors in the big battles scenes. They also couldnt afford good screenwriters neither. The themes are very Zorro like too (fighting for the lady in need of rescue, killing the stereotyped french villain with a big scar in his face and so on). Lots of charicatural characters, specially the villains. I would skip that if I were you. Hornblower on the other hand is a good tv series.
