Default RTW encountered an unspecified error and will now exit

    Hello everyone,

Last weekend I decided to clean up my room a little bit and came across 4 pc's that werent being used.
So I called a friend and he came over to put all the usable stuff into one pc, so that I could play roma surrectum on my own pc instead on others.

However, after he completely cleaned the hard disk and installed a new version of windown xp, installed the graphics card driver (on disc)and I installed RTW vanilla and tried to start it.

Then I got the error stated in this threads title. "Rome total war encountered an unspecified error and will now exit"

And i was like, yeah thanks for telling but WHAT exactly is wrong here

I tried searching across the web and this forum and couldnt find an answer or solution. Maybe you can help me out? Did I miss something?? (as you might've noticed im not exactly a computer nerd so its very possible i missed something like another driver of some sort (as the entire hdd was erased before installing winxp again)

    Below my specs:

    intel pentium IV 2.6ghz
    2,00 gb ram 2.59ghz
ati radeon 9800 pro 128mb agp
windows xp home edition sp2 v.2002

RTW.exe (with the latest patch i believe)

Any ideas on how to fix this? (surely these specs should be enough to play roma surrectum ánd roma surrectum only??) (seriously, nothing else will be installed or run on this here pc) not even internet

    Thanks in advance

Is it because I have to download all sorts of drivers? Motherboard or something similar? Except for the graphics card driver I really don't know what I need to download to run the game....

Edit: Once again apologies for my noobishness

Having done the same - as reported (and got rid of a similar number of old PCs after keeping the HDs!).

I suspect the one thing you've not done (as not mentioned) is re-installed Sound Drivers (I assume you're using sound?). Motherboard sound drivers can be a little tricky; if one of those other PCs has a working separate sound card then I'd use that and get the drivers for it.

RTW/RSII doesn't have to be used with the sound going, but it does require it to be there.

I hope you're able to fix it and have many hours, days & months of trouble-free playing. The one thing I would note is that the CPU isn't running that fast and you may have to have lower settings than you would otherwise like.

As a note, I too got a PC-man to do the work for me, as well as 'cleaning things' up - the main reasons was to get a fully working XP updated to SP3 machine, Windows re-registered and then back to me virus-free so I could go from there. It's been brilliant.

It sort of begs the question, if you found 4 unused PC's, what the heck else did you find? Not sure I really want to know the answer to that though

Other than the graphics memory being a little on the small side it should just about squeak by, the problem with unspecified errors is that they don't give any more information because they can't. It's crashed in a way that no information was available. You could try looking in the event viewer but it's been a while since I used XP and can't recall exactly how to view it, and it may not give much more information.

I'd suggest asking in the Basement - the real windows experts hang around in there and they may be able to help, and also try the RTW Tech help here as this is more RTW than RS.

Alright thanks guys, ill certainly look into those soundcard drivers et cetera.

Note: I know RS2 is much heavier duty for a machine than RTW vanilla. But surely ill be able to play RS2 on a pc that handled Call of DutyII MP with even less RAM?? Oh well ill find out eventually...

Ohw btw, I havent been asked to install direct x while installing RTW. The graphics card is able to handle 9.0 but it just didnt ask me to install.

Should I do this?/download this? Any thoughts?

That is interesting for I am sure that, as soon as the main installation is done, the installer has always gone off and done the DirectX thing - even though 9.0c is already there anyway.

I'm installing from RTW:Gold these days (RTW & BI).

R:TW is from the early 90s and is not optimized. More recent PCs won't play it as well as they do more recent games (unless they're badly optimized as well).
