Default Mound in front of the gate

I notice something in the game when the enemy laid siege onto my city. My city got Cannon tower. I decided to sallied forth and attack the besieging enemy. i counted on my cannon tower to provide fire support since it has great range and multi-kill capability. But then as i do so, i notice there's this elevation in front of my city gates, all four of them. The enemy are forming behind this elevation and were somewhat protected as my cannon tower's shot landed harmlessly on the mound.

I also notice my archers are less effective during siege. I sallied forth from the city wall and form a line of 8 longbowmen in front of the gate. In the field, those eight longbowmen would've slaughtered 80% of the full stack enemy army. but during the siege, after the longbowmen exhausted their arrow supply, the enemy casualty is only 42%. and this is with Ballista tower support. Mind you i'm not shooting from the battlements. i'm shooting from the ground.

That mound is a protective measure against siege towers, since they can't go down too-steep of an incline.

    As for the mound, this:

And as for the archers, I assume they were standing behind one of these mounds?
In that case, they would be firing over it in an arch, making them a lot less accurate.

    PS.
If you have eight units of Longbowmen, is it not better to wait for the enemys´ attack and play defensively? That should be enough to slaughter the enemy as soon as they got close...

If they are standing that close to the gate, why not just put your archers on the wall and fire at them from an elevated position?

it seem's when on the battlements, half the archers will shoot at high tarjectory, making it less accurate.

I hate when there are such elevations on the settlement gates. The only one who gets advantage is the enemy.

I notice this too and find it very irritating.

My solution was to place them a little 'back' from the battlements.

The way to do this is, when you're deploying before battle, put a 'dummy unit' like town militia in a straight line along the wall. Then deploy your achers behind them. Once your archers are in place, send the 'dummy unit' to where you want it. Result is that your archers are a little back from the wall and should fire in a smoother arc rather than that very annoying 'deflection' straight into the air. That is one thing I appreciated about rome total war archers vs. m2 archers.

I hate archer AI on walls. I wish I could stack archer units behind eachother but everything after the first unit won't fire, even at an angle.
